a few months ago alexa A9 toolbar for firefox stopped being used
many users forgot to search for an alternate alexa toolbar resulting in increased site traffic w/o increase in alexa rank or even drop of alexa rank

    the new
Search Status: Search Extension for Firefox and Mozilla offers many attractive features and may help to increase alexa rankings if more people install/use the new alternate alexa toolbar for ffx / mozilla

A site run at work gets no more than 500 uniques a day, average at best. Its Alexa ranking has been climbing for months. It's now down to 30K and change. Another site that has more than twice the traffic is now over 150K and dropping. Ridiculous.

I also wonder if there is a demographic that is more likely to use the Alexa spyware toolbar. This would mean that sites that attract that demo would be ranked way higher than sites that don't, e.g. a heavily trafficked senior citizens site would appear way down the list if most Alexa spyware users are teens.

Unfortunately it's Alexa is a piece of crap which way too many people place importance on.

the thing is some advertisers place credence on it, so that's the metric they use.
