I have taken advice of members here and added a wordpress blog to my website. It has had a couple of my forum members join and begin posting articles and comments. Now, I really do not know much about blogs, blogging, or blogging software so, where should I go next with this? My site is listed on Google but should I update the listing or let google discover it on their own? What are a few ways and places to promote the blog?
If your site have been indexed by Google, so will your blogs. I think you should have a team that manage and promote your blogs. They will promote your site, too.
coldnorth, Next is how is the traffic of your site. If it is less than 1k page view, you need to optimize your site as well as your blog. You mentioned your site got indexed. What is the page rank of your site? If not high in PR, start working on boosting traffic to your site next. I need more info about your site before you added a blog to it, such as niche, goal, etc...
The next step is to keep adding quality content to the blog on your site. The more fresh content you have, the better for your blog's ranking purposes. Also try to create a sitemap of your blog's entries and submit to google via google webmaster tools so that all those pages can get indexed.

Install this theme to your blog at wordpress dashboard "Themes" Next, Install SEO plugins - Google XML Sitemap plugin - All In One SEO pack plugin Submit your blog to - Google Webmaster - Google Analytics Then, register as a member in - Twitter - Facebook - Digg - Stumbleupon - other top 20 social bookmarking sites - Have "Digg This" "Tweetmeme" "Facebookshare" buttons on your each blogpost. Search Wordpress plugins directory for these plugins. Next, start posting all your recent blogpost to facebook, twitter, and other social bookmarking sites. Also, comment on other's blog that is relevant to your business. Always make sure to leave your blog URL in comment author forms. When it comes to blog, content update frequency is the most important. Do not copy and paste articles. Create unique article in your niche and post frequently. Content is king so you now need to start posting interesting and relevant material in your blog. I'd also pimp/market every article you post to improve indexing and increase traffic.
hello friend if u have created a new blogger then its good for your site bcuz it provids u a new link for your site and for bookmarking i think u have to use social networking sites as atniz suggest they r high pr sites n they provide u good back links.
Thanks everyone for responding. As I said, blogs and blogging is very new to me. To answer a few of your questions. The site was put online in late December. Traffic is much lower than I anticipated it should be, right now from 30 to almost 200 per day, so not that hot. The site has been indexed by Google, Yahoo, and most other search engines. I have been building backlinks where ever I can, including Facebook, myspace, and twitter. Facebook has produced traffic, the others very little. Posting the blog on facebook is a good idea I had not thought of. I have been updating the site and adding content at every opportunity and plan much more. I did use the go daddy site map maker but think I might have messed it up and should probably make another. Anything important I need to know for that? atniz, I will submit the blog to the sites you recommended. Anyone have any other advice or suggestions?
If youre looking to promote your blog as well, try something like Traffic Bug. I use that for one of my sites, and as far as promoting it, providing backlinks, its actually extremely good! Just focus on the long tail first with your blog, go for the easy wins, and above all else, provide amazingly good quality before you go for your ego keyword.
You just need a proper maintenance of your blog. Update it daily by writing good blogs, make it more attractive and sign up with social networking sites as well.

Quality material daily might be an issue as I do work full time in addition to this. I do have a couple of members who wish to write but I am not certain what the quality of their material will be. I will get that worked out though. Promoting the blog is what I am really unsure how to go about. As I mentioned a couple of times, I am new to blogs and blogging. I still have a lot to learn on the subject.
Do some early stage backlinking to each of the blog post to help boost overall ranking of the entire website then I'd recommend doing ome deeper backlinking with articles through submission sources like Ezine or GoArticles!
