I wonder how a lesser-known search engine like Ask.com makes money. It could hire staff and do lots of other things, but somehow I don't quite know how it makes money. By advertising? There aren't many ads. I wonder how people earn and give lots of information when people search for it at the same time.
They have their own PPC program much like Google, Yahoo and Bing, but since their advertiser base is much smaller than the other search engines they have an ad sharing agreement with Google. So, if they do not have an ad or at least an ad that pays more than what they could get from Google, then a Google AdWords ad will appear. If they have an a direct advertiser with a relevant ad and it pays them more than what they could get from a Google AdWords ad then the Ask.com direct ad will show.
