OK well i've started submitting to a number of directories over the last 2 days probs appx 70 directories in 2 days, i'm just curious to know what is the max links google will penalize me for?

How many links should i be submitting a day/week to get good rankings and keep safe?

Note made a mistake in title: eneral = general ;)

you can submit as many as you can,
2 days/70 directories is not a big deal,
imo quality is always more important than quantity...
and about the Google penalize question,
go straightly give a call Google! :)

I have heard from friendly, way more experienced SEO mentors that you don't want to have your link count grow too quickly.... that you want to show "natural" growth in your backlink counts.

Wow, though, that strikes me a problematic. Would not any sophisticated business have PR campaigns that heavily promoted a new site or a new feature at an existing site? So wouldn't it be "natural" to have bursts of backlink counts? I wonder.

All that said, here's some hearsay... My understanding is that Yahoo uses more than 600 variables in their ranking algorithm. If that's true, at least a handful of variables would seem to be related to growth in backlinks...

    thanks for the reply,
im not sure what to do next on my site, i have set up a small store, submitted lots of links to directories with keywords and description etc etc but is there any other SEO methods i could use now, which are effective as directory submission.

The one thing you have to keep in mind that it is unlikely that every directory will make your submission live on the same day; some take weeks to do so. It sounds like you are doing this by hand based on your numbers so I doubt that you would reach into the realms of "unnatural linking".

I would continue working on directory submissions but also look for links for other types of sites to diversify your backlinks (directories, blogs, content sites, etc). While you may not hit the wall of too many too fast you might cause some issues for yourself if all of your links are from the same type of sites.

But, then again even that issue is somewhat up for debate. I look at it this way, it could hurt you to not diversify and if you do it can only help you.

actually 70 directory submission in 2 days is not a big deal.. you can submit as much as you can ..coz its main aim is to increase your backlinks and visitors.. :)

Have a look at this scenario...

A breaking news posted on bbc, on your blog, on whatever you want. With good advertising and the next day it has 50 thousands backlinks. Will Google penalize it ? what do you think ?

    backlinks != visitors :)

    Thanks Brian,

I saw that same problem asked here many times, and never understood why ppl are so scared about having tons of backlinks in a short period of time :)
