Jumping th shark.

I had a post I made deleted an I recieved quite a big hit in the rep department from one person. Now don't get me wrong, my post was purely silly in a silly thread and may be deserved the odd 'moron' rep, but deleted it did not deserve.

For me this forum jumped the shark when wierfire's rep thread was closed. Sure the thread was pointless, stupid, immature and other things, but it was fun. It also set the record for the most post/hour ever on DP.

Personally I have noticed a cutback of postings from those that were involved.

I work at my computer and am logged in to DP all my waking hours. I enjoy reading Nintendo's wacko posts, HU's humorously dumb remarks, Fryman's belittling of new posters, etc.

I have taken a lot away from this forum and in my opinion added very little in return apart from a few wisecrack that earned me 8 green thingies.

In my honest opinion, if you take away all the dumb, stupid, pointless, crazy, wacko threads you'll end up with a very inactive forum.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

There needs to be a balance. Right now the stupid threads seem to be winning. I come here looking for interesting information about SEO or any news about Google or other engines, not to find out if members use boxers or briefs or to fill out useless polls.

And yeah, the typical reply I get to that is "well, just don't read those threads". I sure don't read them, I don't waste my time and you will never see my posting in any "the person above you" thread, but the problem is clicking on the "new posts" link and seeing 12 pages of new posts, where 90% of them are just nonsense

I agree, but there are different topics from useful to useless so there is no need to click a 'general' thread if you are looking for SEO advice. All I'm saying is that without the pointless threads the participation in this forum would quickly dwindle and it would be a snowball effect till it was just a ghostforum.

Nope 100% certain, it was a post in this thread:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=479643#post479643

not a new thread. I made post # 50 (which exists) and post # 51 which was deleted.

I even got some red rep linking to it:

didn't we just talk about sequential posts?

Like I said in that other thread, I've made a total of a measly 12 wacko threads! Now I don't even dare post a grin, more than one exclamation in a row, or make a post with the third word in my usertitle, for fear of my username looking like this. ie, I don't dare be wacko!

Ahhh... there's a history to that. I believe Shawn posted a link to the old thread.

That was at least 11 too many.

If this is true, amen - there is a God and a Santa Claus after all...

NO, my post was deleted from that thread because I posted twice in a row. Actually the second post was more relevant than the one that wasn't deleted.

I read that thread, but in all honesty where would this forum be without pointless threads? DP ranks # 7 for 'longest maggot bath' thanks to one of my posts. Believe it or not I have recieved traffic for this key phrase and I'm sure DP has as well and I'm also sure that as a result at some point in time DP will get a sign up due to that key phrase. Now multiply that by thousands, tens of thousands, millions.

Now take away wacko threads and I'll post less, by far, as I'm sure others will.

    What is the ultimate goal?

    *sigh*

No. Not THAT thread (and I'm not going to rehash that thread here either).

The thread REFERENCED in that thread -- this one: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=4358

I think you'll find that some will post less (please!) and others will post more.

To get rid of the damn wacko threads. We're all gagging on the damn things

But many people liked the wacko posts! Make a poll asking if I should be a wacko or normal, with out any off topic options, and you'll probably get well more than 50% 'Be a wacko.' votes.

Translates to 'Be a wacko and you'll be banned.' :(

I don't think I've changed that much since July 7th! And back then I was way worse. I rarly ever post nasty pictures. The last time I did, it was because some one told me to, so Cute Lara would see who I really am.

Those wacko threads helped make DP what it is. I enjoy them and would post a lot less if it wasn't for them.

Is the point of a forum to get posts or quality posts? If it's the latter I'll be happy to set up a forum for all those unwanted post.

Then what are you doing down here? You got some where around 50 boards up there to learn about webmaster stuff, vs. just two boards down here to learn how to have some fun.

What's your definition of 'Anything your heart desires can be posted here.'?

BTW, for any one still trying to learn the definition of the word 'is', it's 'Third person singular present indicative of be.'

I know, I know. It might take a day or two to get some of my wacko cells out of my system. BTW, the 'is' stuff comes from the President on the USA back in the 90s. He didn't know the definition of 'is' after having sexual relations... with... that women.

    You mean this?

    Outside, world wide
    Little silly Billy,s movin' round
Is the talk of the town

Bouncin', bouncin, Billy had a philly
Kenneth Star heard and started snoopin' round
Shirt undone, no one in sight
    Silly Billy went to town
And turned her blue dress white

    Strange sounds Bill found
    With his pants downnnnnnnnnn
Cause little Billy's willy can't say no
No you can't stop Billy's old dilly for no
Tried lyin to the people but we know
Little billy's willy can't lay low

    Fly down, spell bound
Little Billy's willy runs his mind
So he's horny all the time
    White house, no blouse
    Little Billy's pants got hilly
From cigar play too kinky to describe

Arafat paces out in the hall
But wait Yaser wait cause Billy's vertical
Stay down, stay down, stay down downnnnnnnnn
But little billy's willy can't lay low
No you can't stop Billy's old raging hormones
Went way beond dabbing his cover blown
Little billy's willy's out of control

    DNA on her clothes
    Billy's moanin' "There she blows"
    Monica Lewinski shows
    Billy's little willy grows
    Little Billy's fishing pole
    At Lewinski's swiming hole
    Politicians taking polls
    Maybe Billy oughta go

Little Billy's willy can't say no
And he put his stogie wher stogies don't go
Don't tell it to your Grandma
    Cause she might croak
Billy's got a few too many hormones

Little Billy's willy can't say no
No you can't stop Billy's old dilly for no
Tried lyin to the people but we know
Little billy's willy can't lay low

Every forum evolves, thats just the way it is...There wasn't less posting by those invloved with YART because it was closed. I can speak from some experience as I had a big role in that contest.

1.) A lot of regulars are very busy right now...Christmas is hectic anyway when you make your money online and many people are on to new projects. For example several of us are working with Oliver (independantly) on new sites, projects, etc.

2.) I'm all for Wacko stuff and I have always liked Nintendo because of how different he is to the normal...Unfortunately though the trend has been to start a new thread every day on how he is a wacko...We get the point! That is what is putting a lot of people off. - YART was contained so that one thread popped up in the New Posts...Now there are like 10 threads dedicated to some aspect of Nintendo which pop up - Not to mention several polls  . Unfortunately, Nintendos wackiness seems to have commercial overtones these days

DP is still a massive resource for both Webmaster stuff AND General Chat and will continue to grow...Part of that growth will always be a bit of change.

I like your posts Roman so I hope you don't take this as an oppurtunity to go elsewhwere. But you have to understand the frustration by some when a new thread is started when an there is already an existing one.

This forum is STILL the least moderated and although I am sure it has "jumped the shark" many times, I can list 10 good reasons why I always tend to come back.

The above is just based on my feedback I have gotten when people PM me (And why I have to clean out my mailbox once a month)

    Just my .02

yfs1 you are a wise man and I would pay your airfare to fly here so I could take you out to lunch just to learn from you. Everything you say makes sense but I just have one point: POSTS: posts = SE listings = SE visitors = more members = more posters = more posts.

Now I have absolutly no experience running a forum but I'd think that barring x-rated pics and posts full of curse words, any post would be a good post.
