Yesterday my site was listed #1 and today it is on page 3 in google for keyword phrase "nevada renewable energy projects".

Any idea why so drastic a change?

If your site is the new one it's normal. But maybe the other sites get more links your so you drop down. Or maybe it's the google dance...

this is normal. could be due to new site or google dance. your term is not competitive at all so you should be able to secure top ranking for your term with some decent backlinks

Continue to build backlinks. If the site is new then you have no rep basically. Google will move you around until it feels that you are in a good location. From there, you can increase your SERP by link building and adding quality content
