Jump in ranking on google.ie

Hi, we have a client who asked us put them an Irish website up on a .ie domain (in addition to there .co.uk site). The Irish website was mainly made up with content from there UK site. This was not initially done for SEO reasons, but over time I have changed the content to make it different to the .co.uk site to see if I can improve the SEO situation without having to bill my client. This has had little success, but since it was not a priority for this client it has just been left.

I have always monitored the ranking of the Irish website in google.ie (just for my own interest) and for its main keyphrases it has ranked around the fifth page of Google's results, until today when it has jumped on to the first or second page for all main keyphrases (when 'pages from Ireland' is selected'). Previously google.ie has never shown the .ie domain in it results when 'Search the web' is selected, it has only shown the .co.uk domain. Today it is showing the .ie domain for both queries.

I'm really just curious if anyone else has noticed a change in ranking on local Google sites? If not I'm going to analyze the work conducted on the .co.uk site (which is ongoing) to see if anything we have done there would have influenced the .ie results.

No changes have been made to the Irish site for over 6 months. One think I will look into is to see if they have picked up any authoritative links (from another Irish site) that would have affected the situation.
