Hi all, Is it essential to use jpeg image format for pictures on website or we can use GIF format too?? I am building a new website I have some pencil drawing images drawn in microsoft paint colour of these pictures are black and white. Saving these pencil drawn images in GIF format providing good quality and small size (20 kb) as compare to jpeg image.
Jpeg is for more detail like a photo or a sketch with lots of shadows and shades. Gif is for basic graphics like cartoons with just a few colors and not many details. If your pencil drawings are not complex then gif might work good gif files are small and open fast. Try saving in both formats and then look at the pics full size and compare the 2.
PNG is the best to show the full detail of an image, and has transparency to with great masking. gif is great for simple images, like pixel art and other things with one layer transparency. jpeg use for photos etc, because they will be compressed and lose quality
I like to use JPEG and when I need transparency I use .PNG - .PNG seems to just kick .GIF's arse for detail IMO.
With JPEGs you have control over quality vs compression. If gif format gives you sufficient image quality, for sure you can use them for your website.
remember that jpeg file format is for an image that has thousands of colors, e.g a photograph, and a gif image is mainly for art work, drawings or illustrations
Use .gif if youre images aren't of high quality. Pencil drawings should work perfectly fine in .gif format. But if the occasion ever arrises that you need better quality images online, .png is the way to go. They may take a bit longer to load, but the quality difference makes the wait worth it.
Never use GIF unless you require animation or transparency on IE6 or less browsers. Only use JPEG for photograph/near photograph-quality images. Use PNG when you require transparency and only need to work in modern browsers, or for any image that has few distinct colors (i.e. most web graphics, cartoons, anything with blocks of color, etc.)
You can use it. There was a patent issue on Gif a few years back, I think that was resolved. I think that is where you were going with this. I prefer png for transparency, way superior but too heavy in size. On a website (concerning graphics) size matters! That is the one thing I noticed about many sites I have been to. They have huge graphics and that makes it difficult for 56k modem users to enjoy your site. png is not seen the way it is supposed to be on IE6 and below. They have a fix for it but I prefer not to use work around techniques if I can avoid it. It makes your page "weight" heavier. That is another issue not addressed sometimes. Even with .php functionaries and Ajax calls, etc., page weight is a consideration. What I mean is that you should consider load time speed while doing your design. Page weight is the term for how heavy the load is on the server and how quickly or slowly your page resolves from server to browser. I make all of my graphics very light. Graphics are definitely something I love, but they are only interesting the first time a person visits. After that it needs to be content that they return for. I have a very specific method I use. When I Photoshop and I am finished, I take it one more step and use a special compression software to bring it down as far as I can and still stay true to the image. Hope that helps...
