Please visit http://blog.dmoz.org/2008/05/08/dmoz-is-like-gold Nice thoughts there. One of them: If you see a link "Volunteer to edit this category" try and find another relevant location. Pages without active editors take much longer to get listed into. Once you find the perfect directory submit your site every 4-6 months until listed. If you are lucky you will get in eventually. HTML: Please, show mercy when commenting that. And please, dont follow this shaky advice.
Could be worse, they could have given the shaky advice that I gave and told people to actually read the submission guidelines. LOL. Though, I guess I now have an official source to tell people they should be submitting once every 4-6 months to get a listing... so much for the submit & forget policy of the past. Though, I do find it strange that the ODP would re-post misleading information on an official page... kind of lowers the overall integrity of the directory, doesn't it? Now you'll find the submission queue spammed even more then it has been in the past. *sigh*
It is certainly unfortunate that there is little correlation between the various "official" sources of information. This has long been a concern for many, and causes confusion for everyone. Over the last couple of years, many editors have suggested much-needed corrections and updates to the public DMOZ documentation, but for various reasons (most of them apparently technical and therefore out of the hands of volunteers) this has not been possible. Perhaps now that some of the more strikingly outdated discrepancies have been so publicly highlighted by AOL staff, those editor suggestions may be dusted off and implemented. (I think I mentioned that I am an optimist? )
I agree. I used to point people to RZ, but was told time and again that it's not an official source. I was pleased to see the ODP start their blog, but now I'm not so sure. Do we take the advice of the guidelines and pick the most suitable category and submit ONCE or do we find a category with an active editor and submit once every few months till we make it in? You can't answer here, the answer would not be official. You can't point to the guidelines, they were last updated years ago and are now countered by the newest blog post, which is just as official, as it's listed under the domain of DMOZ.org. Ya loose some & loose some I guess *shrug*
Hmmm, I guess that is meant as a compliment (or at least a resigned acceptance of folly), and is probably not a size-ist remark, so I won't take offence.
Yes, thank the gods LOL. Now I'll not be able to use it to show contradiction Kudos to whoever changed it! Now we are back to only "submit & forget" *snicker*
Yes it was a relief to see the quick response, but personally I think it's all rather confusing now, with a jumble of underlinings, quotes, updates and strike-throughs. I'm an inveterate "corrector" myself, forever tweaking things that I write, but sometimes it's better to just give up and start again. So I hope they soon publish another post explaining the situation a little more clearly (and accurately ).
I was thinking about that yesterday as well. If half of the post is wrong, and the other half is right, it stands to reason one my feel that it's all correct, or all wrong. It may have been better to change the theme of the dmoz entry to thank them for their kind remarks, but then point out that they are not following the guidelines. As it stands it just looks like a confusing hard to read mess *shrug* at least someone is spreading the love
Would you show me please which part is right? If you want to read what exactly editors are thinking about this post - look at this: http://shadow575.wordpress.com/ Can tell you that many, too many editors are confused because of this post.
I guess it would be a matter of how one looks at it. The part I was referring (as right) was the compliments given to the ODP and it's listings. The part I was referring to as wrong of course would be the part that is now struck through. If editors are confused, think about the end user. I think it would be in the best interest of all if the post itself was just deleted and everyone just pretended it never happened...
I agree. It should never have been written, but, we all have our areas of expertise. I wouldn't make a good Staff person, and without years of editing experience, a Staff person can't be expected to know all of the subleties of editing. That doesn't diminish my respect for him though. Hiya, makrhod, very nice to see you. You're one of the kindest, most patient teachers I've ever had, and you have a real talent for explaining things, .
