its called "enemy combattant"...what would you rather them have, maybe a low bail so they can get out and do what they originally wanted to do?

Surprisingly, I have to agree. Anyone who plans to murder civilians deserves no rights at all. AT ALL. Freedom becomes a privilege when you're a maniac. Those 2 years without a lawyer could very well have saved hundreds or thousands of lives.

What I thinks is being said is that the defendant was denied his Constitutional Rights. That's a Tragedy ( guilty or not ).

Freedom is a RIGHT, not a privilege. PERIOD. A right cannot be taken away by anyone. At least in my country.

What about when they are thought to be a part of a terrorist organization who literally wants to kill thousands of people while not holding to any part of the geneva conventions...if they don't do that to us, why should we do that to them? At some point in time, what makes more sense, locking up 1 dangerous individual, or giving that person their freedom who then walks and can kill thousands???

So...the constitution is a dead letter and you don't mind living in a monarchy...as long as King George is in charge?

Just wait till Queen Hillary gets on the throne.

How would the constitution protect the innocent people that could have been killed....had that happened, I am sure you would still be blaming the Bush admin, this time for letting him go free....it is a catch 22 for you liberals, you blame bush no matter what.

    It's very clear to me.

It's about innocent until proven guilty. The treatment clearly dictated GUILT (before proving otherwise). Until guilt is proven, every American deserves the benefit of the doubt and is Constitutionally guaranteed that benefit.

Once a Government decides what rights you have or don't have, the entire Constitution is gone and all we are left with are privileges (privileges can be taken away). If this is the case, we may as well pack it in, because there's no more USA and we'll soon become slaves of an already out-of-control Gov.

You do realize this man is a United States citizen, don't you? You know the kind of people Al Qaeda hates for their freedom and all. I would call this Orwellian, but it's not subtle enough.

Dude, this guy is a 'Convicted' terrorist plotter and the people he was making plans to kill were American citizens as well. US administration needs to protect those people too. Now when the guy is 'convicted Criminal and terrorist activist', Drop your support for him, if you do not support his kind.

While terrorists hate 'Your Freedom' they certainly enjoy the freedom given to other terrorist.

The typical, "you support the constitution, therefore you want the terrorists to win," argument that is too common around here

Thank you. This is called the "Rule of Law" which is something that has been put aside too many times in recent history.

Indeed. And a lot of it comes from non-Americans which is particularly disturbing.

I think some people fail to realize that due process, habeas corpus etc are in place to protect the citizenry against oppression from the government. The current system provides only for GWB and his executive office to determine someone an enemy combatant, and they get stripped of their rights.

If you are interested in this topic, hd.net had a Dan Rather report with some experts, and a legal advisor from the white house. Very compelling stuff if you enjoy scholarly debate.

Boo f'ing hoo a terrorist has been convicted. It's a sad day for some a great day for the civilized world, i can't believe how people cry over such things as his conviction, it's either support or sympathy.

No wonder Gworld wanted this guy to go free so that he could kill Americans.
