I did a few searches and didn't find what I was looking for:

How does Joomla fair on Google with minimum changes to a template? Does it seem to get hit with the duplicate content filter if you actually have content on your site, or does the template trip some nasty filters?

    Thanks guys

I've used google for two sites and free mass templates that loads of others are probably using. Google pics them up fine e.g. I made www.cheapponds.co.uk a couple of weeks ago, I haven't done anything with it yet as I've been too busy with other sites, but google has picked it up and it comes up on the first page when i search "cheap ponds" (from the UK).

No big changes or anything just turned SEO friendly on and installed a free template and thats it so i'd say its pretty good.
