Joomla is best because it is professional and wordpress if compared in terms of functions equals a component of Joomla...
Wordpress might be good for some as it is easy to use but Joomla is also not so hard because It's a CMS and doesn't require any kind of programming knowledge...

Answer to above question could be different for each site.
Wordpress is partial cilent which was made specifically for blogging while Joomla is CMS which is very flexible and powerful and offer more complex features compared to Wordpress.
Wordpress is most suitable for blogs and small site like a company info site.
If you designing site which is more large and complex than joomla would be better.

Last to say joomla community is much more active and have thousands of extension to blend sites as you wish.

    I agree with Pradosh,
Wordpress is a very good tool for blogs and small sites. But if you want to create a complete and large site with multiple categories and articles, or another kind of content, Joomla is a better. There are a lot of extensions too. I think Joomla is more complex if you want to customize it, but it's just a personal opinion.

I have used both of them and not to say Wordpress not even comes to flaxibility that joomla offers.
If you are designer it Joomla is a good choice. Going with wordress is much easy, but in future you if feel like expanding you site than it would be difficult.

I don't think you can really compare them, they're made for different things. Anyway, I use Wordpress a lot and I find it very enjoyable to work with. Joomla is kinda giving me headaches when I use it.. or at least it used to about a year ago, cause I haven't tried it since.

    Wordpress

Its just another blog. though wordpress has lots of extensions to expand your site it has its limits.
It works in one way login -> post -> publish , and add some extensions to add some extra features.

    Joomla

Its a CMS (content Management system) has limitless number of extensions, expansion of the site to any possible limit is restricted only by your imagination.
Its internal working principle is what we need to understand.

Components , Modules and Plugins, the three types of extensibility.

With Joomla its possible to design any type of complex site you think. and also Joomla itself can be used as a blog without any additional extensions.

Joomla is a general purpose CMS and wordpress was specifically built for blogs. Joomla has more flexibility when you want to build large components. Wordpress can be used as a general purpose CMS with Pages besides blog and is more user friendly. So, it all depends on the purpose and requirements of the site.

Wordpress is popular for the masses. Every basic tool you want is made for it and easily available. If your website requires nothing custom use it.

Joomla is for websites that require a bit more than standard. If you need to submit, display and manipulate custom data in unique ways for your website it is the better choice.

I use Joomla because my website has a submission process that takes the data adds it to a ranking system, overview table and auto creates pages with links to the user submitted info waiting for me to add information. The pages created from user submitted data use proper SEO.

I would say WORDPRESS for sure.
Much easier to use (i use them both so i know) and more SEO friendly.
    Tons of free plugins.
I don't know if there is any difference regarding server resources usage though....
