Can you please tell me whether if Mambo is now dead and Joomla is the one to replace it or both of them are developing ?

Mambo is no longer maintened. Joomla! is the new project of the former Mambo team. It is the one to go with.

Thanks, I was curious about this as well.

I aim looking to launch a new niche news portal and also may try to convert this www.new-eastside.com to joomla. Now I have to decide if I want to learn Drupal or Joomla.

In reality, Mambo is still maintained, but it's got an entirely new team. The original team forked Mambo to produce Joomla.

There were a number of reasons as I understand it, but a lot of them boiled down to 'politics'.
