Joomla or not?

I have a question. I'm building a community site. Should I use Joomla or develop from scratch? Has anyone had bad experiences with customizing Joomla? I don't need all the features that Joomlas offers. But I do need a powerful CM system. Why some developers use Joomla than starting from scratch? Does anyone know any big sites that use Joomla? Big sites that are as big as myspace?

It rally depends on how customize you want it to be and if you trying to match what you already have or if starting off frseh. If the whole site is starting from scratch then you have a better chance of getting a design you happy with.

The biggest problem with customizing Joomla is understanding the system and the way the modules are displayed. It may take a while to get familiar and comfortable with it.

Moving bloccs around are pretty simple and straight forward. Its a very powerful system becuase its very simple to build off on. Templates are basically a simple html file for the most part. Very easy to work with and theme your entire site.

Just play around with the script for a little while and you enjoy some of the simlpe use of its features.

if you are just beginning Joomla is the easiest i think. Drupal is hard and Wordpress can be hard to theme.

I dont know of any sites like myspace that uses joomla. Joomla is clunky if you don't cache.

ALOT of people build myspace and youtube type sites with Drupal.

    Teamsugar is one example

Also there's DataEngine with has alot of good looking theme's Never tried it out.
Also Subdreamer that intergrates with alot of scripts.

If you have the skills and time to learn you proably would want to do Drupal. If you want good funtionality and need/want it up fast go with Joomla.

Starting from scratch will give you more flexibility but it's going to be a lot harder than using Joomla or another CMS. The point of a CMS is that you don't have to do everything yourself. All that code was pre-done for you. The problem with that is the code is done their way (Joomla's way). That's why starting from scratch is more flexible, because it can be done your way. I say, check out Joomla and if it can do the things you want, use it.

I dont think you will want to build a community site with Joomla. Joomla I would say is much better used for content based sites. Drupal could do well with it, but I would develop from scratch for your specific needs.
