There is currenlty about three times as much interest in Joomla as there is in Drupal.

    http://www.google.com/trends?q=joomla,drupal

Though, interest in drupal is clearly on the rise.

That doesn't make Joomla better, but it is indicative of the support and resources likely to be available. It also tends to fly in the face of the various posters who seem to think that Joomla is made of fecal matter. Clearly, a lot of people like it.

I'm sure a of people like it, but having worked with both extensively I can say that Drupal is far better than Joomla at pretty much everything. The only thing that Joomla is better at is ease of use. Joomla's learning curve is less steep than Drupals, but once you understand how Drupal works Joomla can't hold a candle to what you can do.

There, I said some nice things about Joomla ;) I just think Drupal is better.

See, we can all play nice! :D

Seriously without more info, if it needs a lot of different people collaborating on it, Drupal's granular security is better.

In Joomla, I use JUGA when I need more granular security, and I've use JACLPlus. I like JUGA a lot better than JACL Plus..

But, for built in granular security, drupal definitely wins. Even if I like Joomla better. There I said nice things about Drupal ;)

I've just found that it takes me too many clicks to get one thing done. And Joomla has some kind of memory leak in the javascript which makes the admin area run really slow at times.

when it comes to me, i prefer Drupal and recommended all Dp's guys to prefer Drupal as well. The reason behind this selection can be seen at the posts mentioned above.

We've been using Joomla for our Portal and I'm sure based on the complexity of our portal , a corporate site under Joomla would be piece of cake.

Then again Joomla as a Portal isn't bad at all nor hard :)

Well, I think you've got your answer. ;7)
    Either one will work effectively.

Here's a market share survey that I found:

It's just software. How well it "work" depends on a lot of factors that have nothing to do with the underlying platform.

I have tested both and chose Joomla. Others will choose Drupal. What made my decision is the New Version of Joomla was fairly stable, and Drupal was in the process of updating versions.

It all depens on how large the site is going to be, For a simple not to large website I would go for Joomla.
If you have different editors and a larger site, Drupal.
If you want to be able to have lots of editors with different security settings and need to educate editors fast.. use Typo3.
Small website setup with CMS like WordPress can also be done.

I work with all of these systems and they all have there ups and downs.

There are a lot of comparison studies on the Internet, here is on from me on the SEO Side of things

From a technical standpoint, Drupal is much better. However, because Joomla has become very popular in the last 2 years, there are more modules and themes available.

That's a bit of a cop out reason, why hasn't Drupal become 'popular in the last 2 years'?

That's a really good point. Looking at my previously posted Google Trends graph, clearly Drupal had the opportunity to become more popular more quickly.

Joomla's rise in popularity was meteoric. (Which is an odd term, considering that meteors fall ... nevertheless ...) what I find interesting is that it is beginning to level out, while Drupal is still on the rise.

I find the whole thing kind of interesting to watch.

Also don't forget that Joomla is actually Mambo taken on a slightly different road, so it's kind of split in two and has been around longer than just a couple of years.

    Very good point...

The decline in the interest of Mambo seems to directly correspeond to the increase in interest in Joomla:

    http://www.google.com/trends?q=Joomla,+Mambo,+Drupal

By assuming that mambo and joomla are "more or less the same", we can see that over time, there has conistemtly been 3 to 4 times as much interset in Mambo and/or Joomla as in Drupal.

Again, the recent trend indicates a leveling of Joomla and an increase in Drupal .. It could be that 1.5 is beginning to disappoint, or simply that Joomla has just peaked.

Joomla is more reputed among newer webmasters who want to make things easier.
Drupal may be a little harder to use or adjust, but you will have unlimited choices with it.

    My choice is Drupal.

Drupal without a doubt. Until now I have yet to see big corporate sites using joomla, most prefer drupal for all the right reasons.
