If the core of your site is the forum, then in my opinion migrating to Joomla would be a step backwards. I haven't seen a better forum mod solution for Joomla. The Joomla team even use SMF inside a wrapper on their own site which says a little.

I have used Joomla and it is a nice CMS and highly appropriate if your site is based around a lot more than just a forum. But if your site is largely a forum and one or two other smaller additions, then stay with something built for the job.

I have installed Joomla a couple of times but to tell you the truth, it's somehow more complicated despite being a WYSIWYG type of a product. I'd rather suggest that you make the move to Vbulletin since it's secure, supported, and feature rich.
