i am new to joomla and still in the research phase, but here is what i would like to do:

create a website that requires a user login. allow a user to register with their name, username, password, email, and birth date... (i see that there are several extensions for logging in / authentication)

pull products from some sort of affiliate program, whether it be amazon, shopping.com, or somewhere else. (i see amazon extensions for joomla)

allow the logged in user to add items to a shopping list and then save that list to the database, so that it is available the next time they log in...

that would be the main guts of the site.. with some other content and fluff to go along with it.

is this something that would be pretty easily done with joomla? is joomla too much for the job?

i have some programming experience and i'd like to do this on my own, but would consider having it done by someone else...

i'm just looking for feedback as to whether joomla is the right tool for the job.. and if there are extensions out there that may already do what i am looking for, so that i am not reinventing the wheel..

    thanks for any help.

Joomla could be right for the job but it seems to me that you are looking for a shopping cart script, am I right? If that's just it then Joomla would be too much for it. On the other hand, if you ever wish to expand your site and give visitors more content and other things that you would already have your Joomla site running and you would just simply expand it.

    thanks for the response.

i also want the ability to login and create new users. but the joomla user creation does not have all the fields that i want. is it possible to extend the fields that make a new "user"?

Yes alll that can be done with serious Joomla Extensions..
You can also just tweak the Core Registration system and add whatever fields you want..
The easiest way it to use COmprofiler.
    Thats it!
