Joomla copyright footer?

Hi, I was told that it would be nice to keep the CMS footer on my website by someone on another forum but they also have a feeling that I am required to leave it there, I would like to know too.

It wasn't on the template when I had it I think so I just edit the copyright example there which was, "Copyright stuff goes here." :) I just have a feeling that the Joomla copyright notice has to remain, does it?

    Thanks!

HTML outputted by a CMS is not part of the CMS, it's output. Joomla is released under the GPL which allows you to change the code (which can change the output).

The upshot of this is that you can do whatever you like with the copyright information that is presented in the browser. The one thing you can't do, though, is remove the copyright information from the actual source files (eg. a comment block at the top of each file).

Templates are released under their own licence, generally, and so they may have their own requirements.

I'm not a lawyer (typical IANAL thing) so take that with a grain of salt etc. Best thing to do is read and understand the licence that it is released under, especially in relation to the legal district that you reside in.

i think there is no harm in giving a credit to the person/company who is providing you something for free!

That's true, but some people don't like having logos of other brands all over their website! Especially if you also do that for every single component. :D

Yes a majority of the joomla sites I have seen don't have them. I'm not against putting them on but if it's ok as it is I think it might be ok to leave it for now. I haven't removed anything though for components.

I'm not so much against it, so long as the footer doesn't reveal *too* much... that is to say, some programs (forums, CMS', etc.) have the product name and version.

To me, that's just a really easy phrase to search for and automate once a vulnerability has been found in that particular version. If it's just the product name I don't mind too much but even when I leave it, I try and change it enough to not be at the top of the search results at least!

There are no restrictions on the footer, but you cannot remove the Generated meta tag or the header information (as stated above). ...last I checked, anyway.
