What version of Joomla currently you are using? Are you using any component to upgrade?

As I know you have to upgrade to the latest version of joomla 1.5x to upgrade to the 1.6. You can use Ju upgrade(most probably) to upgrade to Joomla 1.6.

Use jUpgrade , but take a full backup, before you proceed.
