    hi there

i have asked the exact same question on facebook. and here is the response i have received

Joomla! Joomla! has moved to a stable-core model, in which major feature releases are scheduled every six months, with easy upgrade paths. There's much more information about our development cycle at http://joomla.org/.

The short answer is: So we can bring you new features and a better CMS that much faster.

Marshall Short: I hate the way the new version doesn't automatically see the a new template. They have to be discovered.

well... they released Joomla! 1.7 a lil' bit earlier compared to 1.5 to 1.6 ;)
there are loads of reasons, one might be: its just a marketing scheme...

anyways, there are some extensions for Joomla! 1.7, but all are paid, so good luck!

Joomla is a great cms i used ever, its community is large, so its really easy to find a solution. Joomla 1.5 framework have some limitaion like dont have any user access level we can see them in Joomla 1.6 & 1.7 also more power full SEO exactly like drupal.

you mention slow for joomla 1.6, please test the load speed and optimize everything, also dont forget to enable cache.

if you need any solution for your site, please post here. Thank you for using Joomla.

    I meant that:
The core component changed (obviously!!;)) and also the admin theme looks much sleek and awesome...

have you ever used K2 component for Joomla!? <http://getk2.org/>

The Joomla!'s main "content" component (articles, categories, sections and stuff) has been merged with K2...

@mostafa.kamal.dhaka : Hello, about the release cycle, it has been inspired by ubuntu project. Joomla will release a new version every 6 months. They do since Jan 2011.1.6 on 10 January 2011 >> 1.7 on 12 July 2011 >> 1.8 on 12 January 2012 and so on... Of course in the middle, there will be maintenance, minor and fixing releaseBeside that, slowness is rarely a core Joomla problem but generaly due to bad templating, scripting or hosting
