I have installed joomla 1.5 and a template i like. I have used wordpress before but i am having trouble getting my head round joomla. Is there a decent tutorial on making a basic site with all the components?

I could do with just an overview etc...

I would like a site where I can add a stories and respective photos on a daily basis. With users able to vote on those stories.

I want to be able to add a shopping cart with product photos and order pages inc paypal.

I need to have an integrated forum.

I would like to build a user database to attract repeat visits.

    Any good?

I would read all the documentation and spend some time on their forum. I would also start small and build once you get used to it. It sound like you want at least part of it to be a blog which is the easiest thing to do in Joomla. As far as the rest of it, there are plenty of extensions to help get you where you want to be.

I think the hardest part to understand is their category structure. With Wordpress it's categories/posts. With Joomla it's sections/categories/posts. Of course all that is customizable.

Thanks I will look into it myself. I have had a sucessful wordpress site with some good extensions now i want to expand the site into joomla but it means reconstructing in in full from scratch. Do you know where there is a BASIC tutorial on adding each of the fundemental elements? Or is it a trawl through the Docs for me??

Here's a link to an online guide which also has the official and some unofficial guides to Joomla. This should give you a very good start. http://docs.joomla.org/Beginners
