Joomla 1.0 vs 1.5

Hi, I was after some advice.

I'm expanding part of one of my websites, and it will function as an online resource centre.

When I started looking at it a few months ago, I thought I would use Joomla and JContentSubscription. Now, when I've sat down and looked at it, I realised that it's for Joomla 1.0 with no legacy mode.

I saw there was another similar module for 1.5, but was having issues with installing it so I'm not sure what to now.

Ideally I'd like to be able to preview articles with a pay-to-view function, and also pay to download (which is a separate module that I've already installed).

The question is - should I just go with Joomla 1.0 and the original module? Or do something else? I've worked with 1.0 before and know it fairly well, but from reading one of the joomla forums I was left with the impression that they have little sympathy for issues (hacking etc) that happen with older versions, so I'm worried it would be an error to go there. Also, I'm a bit put off by how often 1.5 needs to be updated ATM.

    Any ideas? TIA :)

Better to go with Joomla 1.5 as Joomla! Community is going to close the support for Joomla 1.0 very soon, this march..

So its time to upgrade the site and make it ready to roll ;P

I would go with the new version. If you're making a major site update its the perfect time to upgrade to 1.5.

Some the newer components have been developed for that version only. Beside there are improvements over the older version.

First find out what types of components/modules do you need

after then, check them at extensions.joomla.org, here you will see that the number of extensions for 1.5 only is rising and rising, they are better clearer and more useful.

1.0 is an old hat now. 1.5 has better SEO features, cleaner management, and that's the version you are likely to get more help for imo

Go for 1.58. Joomla 1.0 is more easily hacked.

I don't agree with the above post about 1x being more easily hacked, but I do agree to go for the newer 1.5x. I bit the bullet and started using it a couple of months ago, now I wont make any more sites with the older version.

I think Joomla 1.0 and Joomla 1.5 is quite different.
I'm using Joomla 1.0, and I can modify site layout easily via code editing.
But because I need flash banner plugin (which is available for Joomla 1.5 only). I tried to use Joomla. But with Joomla 1.5, I can't even change my background (the code structure completely different). So I change back using Joomla 1.0 now.

1.5 of course - and don't forget this thing: latest = best - cause it'll be better supported than the old releases just in case of Joomla sure

Joomla 1.5 is definitely better, moreover JContentSubscription is not updated anymore, and many other components also. And it seems to me JoomSuite Member, the equivalent of JContentSubscription for Joomla 1.5, can do it for you. You can ask their support team to help you. They are very responsive.

Joomla 1.5 is my choice. Even one of my site still using Joomla 1.0 [ cant do migration on some part of components ], but for new websites I build are using Joomla 1.5.
This year the world will definitely say goodbye to Joomla 1.0 . The increasing of component build is up to 70% now, and the 1.0 components update will be end soon.

If you use the old 1.0 version, someday you will have to migrate to the 1.5 version anyway. If migration
is not a problem for you, then use the 1.0 version until the module/extension/plugin you want is
    fully working for 1.5.
