Israel was PALESTINE long before Islam was revealed. Look in the Bible, its palestine. The quran most definitely references palestine.
The idea that palestinians dont want a state is laughable
i doubt that many would agree even on the israeli side

perhaps that can not build an economy when most of their land is in jewish hands
one hundred million dollars are being held by israeli authorities that are fully palestinian money

They are not "allowed" to die, they are sentenced to death...something I think more than the USA has...

I am strongly against the death penalty, but who listens to us who are against it?
The son of a Bush has signed the execution of over 130 people while being the governor of Texas.

AND THE SHEEPLE IN THE USA ELECTED HIM FOR A PRESIDENT. That's is a sure sign the American culture needs MAJOR overhaul. Meaning to replace the old beliefs and accept the new ones, the humane Christian values.

UNTIL THIS IS DONE THE USA CANNOT LEAD THE WORLD.
USA as it is now is the BIG BULLY in the world arena. Using military force, twisting arms to any country, that has different opinion.

For example what is this that Yugoslavia did to America that prompted America to bomb them? Nevertheless America bombed them braking all international laws. Now America wants to give somebody else's land to the muslim separatists in Kosovo. How about if the muslims in America decide to separate in one of our states and the decide to make it their own country? How we gonna feel about that?

So I am sure you are against the old teachings and laws of the old testament right? An eye for an eye? And since God helped set those up, you must be against God as well? I really feel sorry for you man. If I could buy you a cookie, I would...would you like Chocolate chip? No, I bet you are more of a mint kind of guy...with pink icing..

Rewriting history. Israel was Israel long before islam was invented. Palestinians have had many opportunities to claim/make a state over the years, and always passed it up. Period. They don't want a state, they want Jews gone from arab lands (something about peace and tolerance). The quran references Israel.

Incorrect. Israel just released money and sadly, the US just gave the Palestinians even more aid. Why we continue to give aid to countries that should "death to America" in their streets is beyond me. God only know WTF Bush was thinking *this time.* Surely not that there is some history here that every time money is given, it's used to kill the infidels

As for land being in Jewish hands, the Jews of Israel have time and again (not the best things they've ever done, that's for sure) given land *back* to those that preemtively attacked it first. What lands have muslims in the middle east given back from all their years of conquest through the sword?

Europe is abolishing everything. You murder, you get death sentence commuted in life sentence, meaning 12 years max. If you good in jail you get out after half term IF this is not your first time. If this is your first murder, than you're ok...

If shoplifters have their hands cut off on the public place and in live on TV, that will reduce tremendously shoplifting...Ditto for any other crime...

    United States:
Capital Punishment allowed (varies by state).

    Murder rate (per 100,000): 5.9
    (Source: USDJ, 2006-2009)

    European Community: Capital Punishment disallowed.
    Murder Rates (per 100,000)

    Example European Countries:
    France: 1.64
    U.K. 1.62
    Italy: 1.23
    Switzerland: 2.94
    Germany: .98
    Spain: 1.25
    Ireland: .91
    Denmark: .79

    - and on and on. It is huge in the Russian Federation (19.27) and many former Soviet Republics.

I think it's too simplistic to believe simply "an eye for an eye" crime and subsequent punishment will result in anything desired.

What are the laws about owning a weapon in countries such as those? Also, you realize the US has a larger population than many of those countries, so that should skew the stats as well...

Gun ownership is restricted among the EU countries. I am not ascribing the lower murder rates to this, but this is a fact.

These are rates, not absolute numbers - murders per 100,000 people. So not sure why you believe this affects the stats, as the rate is a means of comparison - e.g., a country that murders 1 per 2 people is a helluva lot more "murderous" than 100 per 1000 people.

If your argument is that larger population density countries tend to have higher murder rates, then the argument falls flat as most (if not all) the EU countries have a much higher population density than the U.S.

Denmark, for example, with a murder rate of .79/100,000 (compared to the U.S. of 5.9/100,000) has a population density of 126 people per km2 (compared to the U.S., with among the lowest population density among modern industrialized societies, 31/km2).

Looking elsewhere, the story continues. Japan, for example, has a population density of 339/km2, yet a murder rate of .50/100,000.

In other words, though Denmark is 400% more populated than the U.S., it has a murder rate 750% higher; Japan, which is 1000% higher in population density than the U.S.; nevertheless, the U.S. has a murder rate that is 1200% higher than Japan.

I stand by my earlier comment.

It all depends on where you live in the states. If you live in NH, where gun laws are really lax,...you'll find that gun crimes are not high at all.

It has to do with things that aren't PC to talk about...but many people understand what's going on. Now if you go to DC, you'll find it fairly restrictive there, but the gun crime is much higher (per capita).

The gun industry just needs to fast-track their technology on making weapons only fireable by the owner. Once that economical feasible or even mandatory,...it will help out quite a bit. Till then, I don't want my gun rights restrained.

I think the important part of any arguement concerning guns is: Where is the problem, and what in particular is the problem?

The US is very safe in some areas, and in other areas you'll hear gunshots. But the stats portray a rather broad offense, when most Americans are alien to that sort of violence....unless they see it on Cops.

    D16, you said:

So, I responded with some statistics that I believe point to (at the least) a lack of relationship between "larger population" and violent crimes. I'm not sure what part of "I stand by my earlier comments" made you feel I have some need to "chill," but allow me to rephrase,

"I am staying with what I originally said."

    Better?:)

I think that's true, Rick. But I think the same is across the board for all statistics - they are necessarily an encapsulation of trends, and unless you look more deeply, they may not tell the whole picture.

I was once interested in the relationship between violent crime and national identity in the post-Soviet, successor states. I was originally piqued, as among the 16 European states, the Russian Federation and the 3 newly independent, baltic states (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia), there was not only a clearly significantly higher homicide rate, but the homicide rate spiked severely immediately post-Soviet collapse.

Moving more deeply down from macro, national stats, though, the picture is a helluva lot clearer. I won't bore with too much, but here's the abstract to the first of my work on the subject:

So, as always, you gotta know what you're asking. I was merely (originally) responding to a presumption that in order to curb crime - say, thievery - you have to go with an eye for an eye model (in Cody's example, lop off the hand) to achieve desired results. Clearly, as the stats I posted show, it isn't as easy as all that.
