It seemed a bit phoney - since I am a Christian and it was a bit strange on his understanding.

Can I ask you, are your SURE you talking the truth here?
    From what I have read.
    1. Most European don't want Turkey in the EU.
    2. Turkey has just a small piece of land on the European continent.
    3. The mentality and Islamic culture they have is quite different from that of the Europeans and that could spell BIG troubles in the Future when the muslims grow in numbers.
    4. Turkey DOES WANT to join the EU. They are even asking US to help them.
    5. Turkey's human rights are way behind than those of any European country. I don't see how can democracy live together with Islam. I don't know of a single Muslim country that is a democracy.
(Turkey has a lot of work to do on this issue.)

Here is the PROOF the Europeans don't want Turkey in EU.

"Most want Turkey to stay out of the EU, poll shows
    From Anthony Browne in Brussels

Europe The Times July 19, 2005

TURKEY’S hopes of joining the European Union suffered a double setback after the first official opinion poll on the issue indicated that a large majority of Europeans are opposed and a senior Austrian minister called for entry talks to be shelved. .................."

IMO anyone who is truly for Peace, Love and forgiveness is not a threat to the West and should be friendly welcomed when on business or as tourist.

But the anger that I saw today about the popes remarks (.....The pope quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th-century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and a Persian scholar on the truths of Christianity and Islam.
"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," Benedict said. "He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'" ......)

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060916/ap_on_re_mi_ea/pope_muslims

So this outrage shows again, muslims are looking to fight every time somebody freely expresses their thoughts. Even if they speak the truth. The Byzantium Emperor could be quite right that the Jihad has not brought anything good to anybody. Spreading Islam with the sword what good is that? Why do you want him to say it was good when it wasn't?

If Islam is a religion of peace, love and forgiveness why don't you muslims just say "We don't care what you say. We are good people, we are not going to fight you over words that are not true."

But guess what THEY DID THE WRONG thing again as they did with the cartoons. They started with protests.
If I believe in God, and know that God is almighty, all-knowing, why would I care what somebody thinks of me?

The most important thing is WHAT GOD THINKS OF ME. Not the pope, the priest, the imam or a guy down the street. They don't hold the key to paradise.
God is the one who holds the Real Power.

Of course I'm sure. In the beginning people were looking warm to EU. But later when they started to touch our sensitive points (like Northern Cyprus, Mohammed(PBUH) caricatures ) Turkish people cooled off from EU. Even in the beginning %40-50 of Turkey didn't wanna be a part of EU. And now even if it's not %90, I'm sure it's %70. For your 2nd question, yes just a small piece. Edirne, Kirklareli, Tekirdag and half of Istanbul. For your 3rd question, already that's why they're afraid of us, that's why they're trying to set barricades to us. Who asks US' help is our government. You can be absolutely sure almost no one likes USA here. Turkish people hate USA, I'm afraid(I'm not one of them). And they would never want US' help. For your 5th question, Turkey is not like Iraq, Iran or like other Muslim countries. In our country, we have modern Islam, and we have democracy for sure. But yes, about human rights, we have a lot to do, I agree with that.

    True.

Kemal Ataturk did something to civilize Turkey. And now the Turkish army is the pillar that holds the democracy on its shoulders. The very moment the Turkish army gets off the streets guess who'll take power.
Europe knows (they found it the hard way) the less mulsims it has the better the security will be, the more freedom they'll have.
They see what's going on in Kashmir, Indonesia, Chechnya, Philippines (Abu Syad is fighting for separate country), Kosovo, they saw what happened in Spain and in Beslan Russia (where Islamists shot dead hundreds of children in the back) and know that Islam is not quite friendly to non muslims. Like it or not that's how they feel about Islam. I didn't make up these facts.

Politicians often will not tell the truth. They think one thing, but say another often trying to please somebody. WHICH IS VERY WRONG. It is against God to speak lies. Speak the Truth even if they crucify you for it.
Do not understand me wrong. There are a lot of very good people living in muslim countries. There are a lot of good muslims in the world who believe Islam is about Peace and Love. I hope that one day all muslims (including the imams and the ayatollahs) will start believing in that, that God is all about Peace and Love.Until that time the shepard’s will have to use fences to protect the sheep.
