I guess I don't understand the fascination with her. She's made to look that way. Anyone heard of airbrushing? Makeup, maybe? Sheesh. It's not real beauty, folks. Before anyone deigns to reply, I already have ya'll covered. "You're a girl, of course you'd say that. You probably think all men are pigs. Blah blah blah blah blah." Anyway, that's my two cents.
Well, you can only airbrush so much, but I see your point. Can't really judge if she's a true beauty or not till she gets arrested. The Yasmine Bleeth everyone loves vs. The one you'd get nightmares from -Michael
Michael, Hah, classic. But yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. The "beautiful people" are supposed to look that way. They have millions of dollars to spend on personal trainers, makeup artists, hair dressers -- not to mention television spots and magazine covers are all airbrushed to look "flawless," when of course they're not. It gives girls a complex, like they have to live up to this unobtainable ideal of beauty.
Denise, I do see your point, but you have to admit it's swinging a little far to the other side of the argument to say that all women are like that. While I don't particularly think that Jessica Simpson herself is the bomb (I mean she's cute and all, just not as much my personal type), I have seen candids of her and many others, and the makeup done for modeling shoots and so forth don't add that much to her. Same for many other women as well. Elisha Cuthbert is another good example. Yes, her FHM (or was it Maxim?) layout looks much different than say, her head shot in her hockey blog (yes, she has her own blog, just not updated in a while), but she is still hands down gorgeous. Side note - did you browse those mugshots at all? Notice how for the most part the guys don't look much different in them than they do in most shots? I mean, some of the women look the same (see the "Lost" women), but it seems like a higher percentage of the guys. I'm glad I'm a guy, I like being wysiwyg. -Michael
Michael, No, of course I am not saying that all women are like that. Obviously, celebrities need to have some form of natural beauty to get into the business in the first place. I'm just saying, the "extras" people use to make these women look picture perfect can have a detrimental effect on a "normal" woman's self esteem and body image.
There are a lot of talented female celebrities that are real attractive, but they are honestly few and far between. I agree that many extras and enhancements are used to further elude to the beauty of some stars, but I think positive exposure to the reality of these 'extras' and a positive reinforcement of their own image and esteem of young women should counter the "fake" reality that many celebrities enjoy. Parents and society want to blame celebrities, magazine, media et al for the destruction of young women today, when in reality, they're usually these crutches as a scapegoat for not having intervened in their own children's life all along. I have two daughters so I'm not just running off at the mouth so to speak. It is my responsibility to know who they idolize, want to mimic, and how they're otherwise judging themselves. It is my responsibility to educate and guide them. If they begin a path down an unhealthy road, I will know it because I am involved in their lives, not just daily, but constantly.
Welcome to DP - no doubt you'll be a valuable addiition, especially as you educate us on how the Internet works for real.
Personally, I think April Gilbert beats Jessica Simpson hands down, at least in this video (parody of Paris Hilton). That's just me though. -Michael
Just being on TV all the time makes guys want her. Stardom in general is way overrated. I think she looks good, but know girls who look a lot better. And they're not TV.
Agreed, Blogmaster. I suppose celebrity and stardom would entice males. But I also know women who look a lot better than those on television, and they don't have the luxury of personal trainers and makeup artists.
OMG, that was sooo funny! [where's the rolling on floor smilie when you need it ?] Obviously she was trying to act extremely dumb for this skit, but still it is a classic and those leggs... wow, who cared about the blade servers and roto routers in that scene? wrmineo, thanks for a good laugh.
