The big O did it and is going to be the next president. I do think it is cool that someone other that a white man has been elected, but I wish it really didn't matter what color a person was.

Now jesse jackson has been shown crying... I had to wonder if it is because his career of keeping racism alive is coming to an end. It would be nice to see that guy go away and just take his millions and young flings and never show his race baiting face again.

    Thoughts?

But officially he is black. So unless jackson starts calling obama names like they did to Rice and Powell, it will stick.

Congrats to the big O crowd.

Without the blinders of cynicism on, it might have something to do with the fact that Jesse Jackson, a man who marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, Alabama, who watched firehoses and dogs set on men and women marching for an equal right to citizenship afforded all others, could not help but think on 40+ years of struggle to get to the point where a man like Barack Obama could obtain the Presidency of the United States. I wept with Jackson, and am unashamed for having done so.

I'm torn on this. I'm not a Jesse Jackson fan. He did his part in the civil rights movement but in the last few decades I think he's done more to hold blacks back. However, seeing him tonight, the tears seemed genuine.

Maybe I've been wrong about him and he really believes he's been doing the right thing for blacks in the more recent years and his intentions weren't parasitic.

Whatever the case, his race baiting tactics have less credibility after tonight. It's time to stop blaming whitie. There are some white racist idiots left and always will be, but they're not a major obstacle anymore, they're a dying breed. Let them die and let us finally join together as Americans for fucks sake.

Because Jesse Jackson was there when Martin Luther King as assisinated.
Jesse Jackson was fighting for civil rights when the police use to use attack dogs against black people trying to vote.
Jesse Jackson was fighting for equality for all Americans since before you were born, so if he is shedding tears, it's because he has earned the scars, dog bites, police batons, and the respect to have fought the fight so that a man, any man, and every man can be judged by the content of his character, and not the color of his skin.

Without people like Jesse Jackson, and our fathers, grandfathers, and everyone else in America, both black and white that endured so that our country would one day be a truly united nation..he has earned the right to cry.

Judge him by his life, all of it, not just what you think you know of the last few years.

Jesse Jackson has earned the right to cry, and he was crying for all of us, even you.

In that camera shot of him crying he looked completely and utterly lost in his own thoughts.

I didn’t vote in this election, I’m not black and neither am I an American, but when Obama’s victory was put into context with the struggles of black people throughout America’s history, I couldn’t help but feel a little emotional.

    OMG I agree with debunked!

I'm grateful to Jessie for all he did many years ago. But today.... is not many years ago.

People like Jessie and to an extent Al Sharpton are a drag on our move towards erasing color lines not a help. Their old school way of thinking is something I see in older African Americans a lot and is very troubling. They still don't trust white people. They still see racism in EVERYTHING. And they still get far more angry at any sign of race than is necessary.

Folks this is 2008. We LAUGH at racists now. Their ignorance is exposed. They don't even deserve the energy it takes to get angry at them. Just look at them, shake your head, and move on.

The part where I agree with debunked is that a LOT (most) of the so called civil rights leaders have a vested interest in keeping racism alive. It has made them rich to this day and continues to. In the African American community Jessie Jackson becomes more of a joke as time passes by. Thank goodness.

The question is why was Jesse Jackson crying, not whether he is now a force for division or unity. I am in full agreement with Hmansfield; it's immediately what I was left with as well. And it cannot be denied that if not for the blood and tears of Selma, there would be no President Obama.

I'm fully aware that his question of why he was crying and answer that it is because he is idea of keeping racism alive was satirical.....

What I'm saying and trying to point out is that the idea has some merit.

Of course Jessie was literally crying because he was a proud black man watching the first black president give his acceptance speech. My wife cried too.

But if you go back and look at the things Jessie has done recently in the name of racial equality you "might" not be so quick to jump in and defend him. As a double minority I can tell you Jessie does not speak for the majority of us age 45 and under. We're trying to move on. Jessie makes it absolutely clear in all of his actions that he wants to keep it an issue.

George, the title of this thread was "why was Jesse Jackson crying?" I didn't intend on defending, or critiquing, the man. I intended on providing my thoughts as to why the man was emotionally overwhelmed, and I did. I was as moved by that as by the day I met Ossie Davis, for whom I acted in the world premiere of his play Sybil: on meeting Davis, I was overwhelmed to meet a man who, with his wife Ruby Dee, was at one point literally taking his life in his hands merely to act in a play with white actors on a national tour, with swings through segregated parts of the country.

In other words, I just wish to recognize history, and recognize those who helped make it. I guess, allow the man his honest tears.

I think it was kind of silly really. Sure, it was a big moment. But you will know that racism is really gone when people say "who cares?".

So much emphasis being put on his race and then turn around and say how this was a big step against racism. It seems a little contradictory in my personal views.

I'm lost. This thread asked a question as to why it was likely Jesse Jackson was volubly crying, was it not?
