Actually, I think he started out ok when he said, "many of us know that affiliate programs--the ones where folks get a commission for selling something--are one of the major contributors to index spam and pollution on the web".

Obviously, the true spammers don't want to work, they want to make "easy money". So affiliate programs do make that easier. Sign up and spam 2 million email accounts with a link to the affiliate program's main page. How easy can it get? No content to write. No site promotions to do. Because of that, SOME affiliates are major contributors to spam.

Then he went on, however, and said, "the honest truth is that most consumers DON'T want to go to the sites that Affiliates are making. Affiliates typically make sties that are "thin" with little original content, and in some cases stolen content". In my opinion, those statements indicate that MOST affiliates are spammers. Even if that were true, it's a real slap in the face to those who don't use spam. It also ignores the fact that many people use affiliate programs to help their visitors find products that relate to the subject matter of their site but might be hard to find or are not centrally located anywhere. Those customers DO want to shop at their sites. I know. I've had "thank you" emails saying so about my affiliate sites. There's no original content on those pages but the content is arranged uniquely and conveniently for those shoppers and, therefore, has value.

Jason probably realizes that those good uses of affiliate programs exist, but he probably would have been wise to point that out so it didn't sound quite so much like a denouncement of all affiliates.

Probably did it to bring more attention to affiliate summit. Stupid if you ask me. 95% of all affiliates don't use any kind of "spam" methods...I never heard of Jason Calientis anyways!
