Michael Jackson showed no signs of illness or lethargy during concert rehearsals preceding his death, according to one of the owners of the sound stage where the singer practiced. “He looked great. He looked fabulous,†said Johnny Caswell, a principal at Burbank, California-based CenterStaging Music Productions, where Michael Jackson rehearsed in April and May before moving to larger facilities. “A young man of 50 years old.†Michael Jackson, the self-proclaimed “King of Pop,†showed up almost daily at CenterStaging, frequently rolling down the window of the SUV he arrived in to shake hands with fans who would gather around the entrance, Caswell said in an interview. The singer was preparing for a series of 50 concerts scheduled to begin next month in London’s 02 arena. Michael Jackson final rehearsal was at Staples Center, the Los Angeles venue that, like 02, is operated by concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group, owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz’s Denver-based Anschutz Co. Randy Phillips, president and chief executive of the AEG Live unit, was among those who saw Jackson at the last rehearsal, according to a statement issued by the company yesterday. “I take great solace in the pride and confidence he exhibited in the rehearsals on Wednesday night,†Phillips said in the e-mailed statement. “That is the memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.†The rehearsal on the night of June 24 was his last.
