Does anyone have experiences with IX Web Hosting?? We are interested mostly in their unlimited pro plan (and would run it on linux) I of course would like to know how this runs with php-software like Joomla, Drupal, phpLD, VBulletin and possibly social bookmarking software. One critical issue to me is of course the working of SEF-Urls rewrite on Joomla/Drupal and of course phpLD.
well now all top hosting company support cms software like joomal, blogging wordpress and URL rewrite. So i think that won't be an issue, may be ensure they have best 24/7 customer support, high uptime and site upload time.
They seem to comply with that as well. And I have one good opinion on those. But of course I would like to have a second opinion as well.
Their basic plan does not include mysql databases. I would recommend using FatCow or HostGator instead.
Whoa! Do they really give that many (15!!) dedicated IPs with that plan?? All hosts I know charge at least $2 per dedicated IP per month. Excluding this, the other features are like in any other host. I'd suggest you make a list of all your must-have features and ask their support if they're supported (control panel, SSH, etc, unless it is listed on their website), before you sign up. I think almost all hosts support mod_rewrite, so you need not worry about that.
The price vs performance seems to be far better then any local offers. We also consulted one other local user and they were pretty happy with this. I did worry about especially that and went on their support chat room. According to them they have, but only with the linux one. In the end seeing is believing. If it's not all we wanted, we still at least have a huge storage facility. I will also study their User manual and would welcome anyone else that does have first hand experience with them.
well hmmm i think u newbie to hosting. unlike desktop in internet most of the site use linux, apache and php combination. The script you said joomla is specifically made for linux, apache and php. So where ever you go many will have linux and apache combination. In fact linux have less hacker attack then window for the reason not many know linux so less hackers lol. Well mod rewrite is common function in linux function and come with it but in windows hosting mod rewrite generally won't come and even windows lack joomla support. You need to modify and install software to support rewrite. I think no will allow you to do those in shared hosting. Well my point is joomla, linux and apache is the right combination, they all made for each other.
I'm relatively new to hosting. In the past I just hosted together people. I recently got access to an IIS panel for some of my web sites. IX Web hosting told me that one can switch to linux and then mod_rewrite will be on. That's why I tend to a linux host + these crucial functions. ... And I intend to use them togehther in the future. One needs to add to this: - Drupal applications - phpLD - software to run social bookmarking sites. - free subdomain blogging.
If I have to give you a good suggestion, I would advise you to go for either arvixe, hostgator or bluehost/hostmonster (bluehost and hostmonster are from the same owners). Arvixe is the cheapest out of all these three and they have grown their hosting on reliability and trust. They have been growing rapidly in the last few years and are also known for being cheap while also being a quality web hosting. At the same time, Hostgator, Bluehost and Hostmonster are also huge and old hosts and they are very reliable too.
Thanks Waziuz, I've seen that names popping up when searching for hosting providers ratings. I'd consider them, too. But my associate already decided to take the unlimited pro contract from IX Web hosting. The reason being that an other orginisation he's a member of does indeed host a news media site on their server and has good experiences with them. But still I would to know of potential problems concerning IX, since this allows me to be prepared when something happens. Other friends of mine do test bluehost right now. I think when getting fully into business one should have more then one leg to stand on.
Torsten, Unless your scripts/apps are in ASP/ASP.NET/ColdFusion, you shouldn't even think about Windows hosting. PHP runs best on Apache, and Apache runs best on Linux. mod_rewrite is an Apache module. Their Windows servers probably use IIS, otherwise mod_rewrite works with Apache for windows as well. I don't think any one runs windows hosting servers with Apache... The IIS panels you have seen might be Helm or Plesk. Linux hosting panels are generally cPanel or Plesk (it would still be somewhat different for Linux). In case you sign up with ixWebhosting, for the apps you intend to run, you must go for the Linux hosting. btw, I don't think more than 90% of those using these big hosts will have any major issues with their hosting.
I hosted an adult website with IX some time ago and both performance and support were great despite I chose the smallest package they offer.
AFAIK Windows uses ISAPI Rewrite And LINUX uses APACHE. At the moment I'm running on a Windows servers. JOOMLA, DRUPAL phpLD work. But the Rewrite functions do not work for JOOMLA and phpLD (at least not with having done something to the script). That's what we are doing at the moment. IX seems to be more strong on the LINUX side anyway. What concerns me now is more the processing speed of the internal databases. Some forums seem to have a problem with that. ... That brings me to two other questions, since we will be doing rerental on sites: 1. How do they deal with objectional or controversial content? I'm not thinking of "adult" stuff, but politically controversial content, some peole might find objectional. I should note that nothing of this will be illegal in a free country. 2. Running huge complex databases on the system. I'm thinking here of vBulletin forums, directories, ecommerce sites etc.
