You can set up a domain catching with one of the registrars for double the normal cost of a new domain name. When this one expires it will be automatically snatched back for you after the grace period if they do not pay for it.

There are many registrars which offer the service of domain backorder.

Yeah, and after renewal is forgotten domains usually fall into a parking page for the next 45 to 60 days to complete their cycle (redemption, pending to delete, etc.)

Did someone actually end up registering the domain, or is it going through the expired process, before it becomes available? If someone bought it, most likely the only way you'll get it back if you make an irresistable offer to the new owner of it.

Yes, if you've been slow enough to let it lapse completely and someone else has purchased it you could have a problem. They'll get first opportunity to renew and might not be keen to let go of that domain.
