Buying and selling links has its risks but so does not doing it at all, and we all know that we need to take risks from time to time.

I would stay away from footer links, dont go sponsoring a ton of wp themes, dont go on a spree, suddenly getting a ton of links doesn't look natural.

Get very relevant links, dont do it publicly, try everything to make it look natural, and continue with your natural (non paid links) building too.

The problem with No.2 is that it has No PR.
When the post gets moved to the second page of the blog, you loose the PR value of the link.

Really....haven't found that to be true at all

Actually this is much riskier and could be useless. Article marketing spam is a well known trick link spammers use to boost a sites ranking short term for long tail keywords such as,

    - flying carpet rides in long island new york -

Once Google scores the method as artificial the rankings fall, and you can find 10,000s of webmaster whiners posts here at DP. ;)

I also believe Google has pointed out many times that free links from directories (which would include article directories) are worthless.

Excellent advice, don’t publicly reveal your site.

Don’t advertise on sites under a heading such as “paid links” “Sponsored Links” or anything that suggests that your link was paid.

Keep away from websites that openly advertise selling links. Many people believe, me included, that sponsoring templates and themes is no longer a good option.

    Thanks Brian

Isn't it Ironic that the largest Scraper Site in the world... who gets their content for free is against a business buying links? Oh no... don't upset the Google Gods. After all why should a business profit from Google Search if Google Can't?

Google's Matt Cutts is constantly bashing paid links and they are always trying to devalue them. But the reality is if you can buy links and get traffic and make money then that's what you should be doing. And Google can't possibly filter everyone.

Buy links that make you money by sending qualified traffic. If you buy links for ranking what is the point? As soon as you stop buying those links will disappear along with your ranking.

And Google as large as they are is not the only game in town. I make a lot of money from Yahoo and Bing Traffic. I'd rather be #1 on yahoo than #5 on Google.

Well, how were you able to determine that your competitors are buying links?

Paid links are pretty obvious and easy to identify usually, because link sellers don't sell to just one customer. They want to maximize inventory so they sell a bunch of links on the same page - as many as possible. So the result is you have a bunch of links on the page, and it looks pretty odd.

As for sneaky competitors doing it to sabotage the competition, you mean if the competition hasn't bought any links - there is a risk of this happening, I admit, but organic links are in most cases easy to differentiate from paid links. So the guy reviewing the reports at G would probably ignore it AND flag the reporter as prone to false reporting.

Google strongly encourages users to report paid links. They haven't been able to work out an algorithmic solution of identify paid links, so they are relying on users to report paid links. It is easy enough for humans to identiy paid links. So that's why they encourage people to report paid links.
