    I don't think it matters

pr only helps your ranks in search engines and stuff right? So it will show your www.asldkjf;alk.com instead of as;lkjdf;as.com which really makes no difference.

Whichever variation you choose, stick with it. It doesn't matter to search engines, as far as I know, whether you use the www or skip it.

The problem comes when you have incoming links or even within your website's internal linking structure where the www and non-www url's are mixed. At least in terms of Google, you're splitting your pagerank because:

    http://domain.com

    Does not equal

    http://www.domain.com

You can use your htaccess file to force the www or non www, and maybe that'd be a way for you to keep it under control.

Use a 301 redirect and you should be fine.

    not just subdomain

    yoursite.com
    www.yoursite.com

are identified as two different URLs backlinks/PR for both will be different.

i always do link exchanges with www.mysite.com .Its the perf way.
