ahhhha... i new thier was an explanation somewhere :p

actually i wonder if the paid links was the issue? as i was to busy last few months building my sites
rather then chasing the high PR links like some (not all) others where..

doesnt matter though as we all know that it wont be long before solution is found and everything
goes back to normal for those that know seo...

    thx

Your argument is weak Barre Tire, if they were penalizing Directories because they felt they were competition then why is Yell, whitepages, craigslist and so on not affected? Google have gone for PR chasers simple as that.

@malcolm; Haven't you ever wondered that perhaps your directories at the moment are insignificant to Google, what's you highest PR? Perhaps flying under the radar instead of trying to fly above as the penalized ones did has done you a favour.

they read these threads just like you and I and nothing gets past them
even new directories are feeling this crunch... see if you find yours..

E.L., I had the exact same experience this past week. My highest-traffic keyword phrase, quite competitive, was sitting at #3 or #4 for quite a while. Then lo and behold, it dropped overnight to page 4. Like you, I'm not a directory and I sell no links (we are entirely nonprofit). I'm just riding it out, and after a few days it has climbed back ten spots or so.

It happened to me also, my pages are in the first pages of certain keywords then it was gone.

I hope it will come back.

So are you saying that its not just directories but the general population? If so what's all the fuss about.

Just to let you guys know, our TWBDir does not appear to have been affected. It is ranked inside the top 20 for 'submit site URL'. It is also ranked #1 for it's name. The thing that might interest you though is that the site is PR4 and I have never paid for an incoming link. The domain has also been indexed for a few years now. I do charge for submissions (very cheap) so I guess that means I am selling text links.

My directory is now listed in either DMOZ or Yahoo! and is not very large. I think in my case it is a mixture of luck and no purchased links that has enabled me to avoid these changes. Having said that, I don't actually moniter search engine traffic to this site so I couln't tell you what impact this would have.

Good luck to you if your rankings have dropped!

OK, do a search for Web Directory and wikipedia is number 4. Do a search for about anything and wikipedia pops up on the first 1 or 2 pages. Heck, wikipedia even returns as number 20 and 21 for farts.

If anyone needs to be blacklisted, it's wikipedia. However relevant the information may be, I'm tired of seeing wikipedia definitions pop up on every search I do in Google. I thought that typing in define: keyword would get a definition. But type in belch, and wikipedia sits there ready to define the act of burping in the number 3 position...

Our directories are doing fine so far. Nothing startling. Just climbing slowly through the serps's for their selected key words. Nothing to panic about. ;) Is this why we havent seen any of those inane Whats The Strongest Directory posts lately?
And mine. Which is why I can spot them without even so uch as a breath of wind.
Where are Aviva and Alive? They should be here answering questions and explaining why these people have timed it wrong. Surel they know the reasons and saw it coming.
