Right now directories feed the serp's. There is nothing wrong with that. Thats the way the internet works but it wont be like that for much longer unless we take steps to put out those fires ourselves. Googles message is quite clear. Its also justified and I would even go so far as to say that they deserve credit for the chaos this is causing. Its not doing them any good but if we can get back onto an even keel its going to be a huge boost to his industry.

You credit them for purposely dropping the sites/directories in SERPs?

That's correct. On my non-directory site I had my highest-traffic keyword drop from #3/4 on Google's first page down to page 4. It's slowly creeping back up. I'm just ignoring it and riding it out.

Keyword SERPs change all the time. The worrying factor here is these directories are not appearing for their own names.

I do. Its long overdue and the chickens are coming home to roost. Its not as if we were not warned and even at this late stage some clowns are having difficulty understanding whats happening. Where are those boys from Aviva and Alive? Maybe they could give you a better answer. Shouldnt they be here looking for answers?

I wouldn't be surprised if they're just devaluing certain links. I see a few directories such as Alive and Epitrope not showing up for their own names. Some of my own directories are still ranking for their names even though they're little piles of shit. It could be manual. Its interesting that Google ranks anything from the Google directory since its entirely scraped from Dmoz, oh wait, thats standard Google.

yesterday my google traffic was 75% lower than usual. I have dropped ranks for ALL keywords, not just my main domain. It really puzzles me...

One of my old sites gets almost all its links from directories. It took a big nose dive in serps and traffic over the weekend, i wonder if other people are seeing this?

Seems like we have something in common here.

I was checking my rankings for some terms for which I never advertised. (Yet I was on page #1 for them)

But today, I am coming at Page#3 or sometimes Page#4.

Need to do something about it ....

If it comes back in 30, 60, or 90 days, you'll know it was a penalty. Keep an eye on it.

    Some people talk some rubbish.

It is very simple to see if a site has been issed with a ban

simply type in www.alivedirectory.com into the Google search bar if it does not rank in position 1 it has been issued with a penalty.

Both the Alive Directory and Bigweblinks look fine.

A lot of time people talk about penalties and have no idea what they really mean. Take for example the duplicate content penalty. All that simply happens is a page score less points for having duplicate content on it, that simple.

It is amazing that so many people go into the world of online business and do not understand the basics.

People also think that the only way to good PR and SERPS is to throw money at a site, totally wrong.

My website is now 8 months old, probably been up and running properly for 6 months, during this time I have taken 6 weeks holiday when I did not touch the site at all. The site is in one of the most competitive sectors on the web. Yet by applying common sense SEO fundamentals my site is listed at number 14 out of 1.8 billion for the term 'Business Services' I have a PR of 4 and an Alexa of 500,000. Now these figures are not that impressive compared to some, I grant you. However I have spent less than £400 on advertising. This was mainly due to listing in Yahoo and Business.com.

If people apply the basics to their directories they will be fine. The trouble finding out and implementing basic SEO fundamentals is hard work, hence lies the problem.

Maybe better to say, the majority of posters on DP care? I don't and there's lots with the same mind, it seems to me the only one's who care are PR chasers.

Can I see it please, I'd love to see why he came out with the BS that botw is the oldest directory on the internet when it was until a couple or three years ago a jumped up awards site, NOT A DIRECTORY.
