One fact is maybe it would be helpful to quote WHO you are quoting!?

You tell me what facts I'm not showing and I'll start showing otherwise. ;)

You are missing the point - again. It's not just a few directories - Google is enforcing their guidelines for webmasters wherever and whenever they can.

"There are none so blind as will not see."

You don't see what you refuse to see.

Exactly. Let's face it and stop being so afraid of Paid Links. Paid links are nothing but Advertising. I personally couldn't care less about Google, their PR and what they rule and decide.

With enough traffic, not necessarily from Google, any directory can be successful from repeat traffic and repeat Clients. I have proved this to myself many months ago, even with my new PR-0 sites.

Offer your visitors more than just a basic directory and they'll be back. Forget about Google and concentrate on your Directory and your CLIENTS! Give them what they want and need. Give them a reason to come back to your site. Don't do it for Google, do it for your Clients and your Directory!

As far as I am concerned. GOOGLE WILL NOT DICTATE WEATHER I MAY OR MAY NOT SELL LINKS! IT IS UP TO ME!!! I couldn't care less if they like it or not.

Just had 2 paid links from a repeat Client. He just PROVED MY POINT!

Actually they don't give a rats ass if you sell links or not, they actually encourage it, they just indicate that if you so wish to be included in their index that links sold should be of the nofollow, javascript or redirect flavour!!!

No. Paid links that don't pass PR are nothing but advertising. Converting paid links to advertising links that don't pass PR is exactly why Google does when it detects a paid link.

Oh, really? And you did this with no traffic from Google at all? I find that hard to believe. And even if true, how much better would you have done WITH Google traffic?

No Please dont claim that Aditya_sfs has opened up a can of whoop ass agains freewebspace. You need a better understanding of the PR theory. The amount of PR or link juice a page passes does not only depend upon the PR of the page but another 100 factors which makes it virtually impossible for a human to calculate stuff by counting as you did above. I can show you PR6 sites which have just few hundred backlinks and PR2 sites with 10000 backlinks. A PR0 Link might pass more value than a PR6 link, its possible my dear.

Which BOT are you talking about. BTW When are you listing your BOT on NASDAQ ? :p

basically what I think google are doing is what they want webmasters to do (but of course the majority wont for a number of reasons)
they want you to nofollow on the links on homepages and high profile pages
it wont happen to the extent that google want so they will implement it into their algorithm
by initially asking for webmasters to nofollow and use js etc they are setting up examples they can use in their algo change.
the addition of the paid link reports also provides data for which to test and improve the algo
I think the sites penalised were probably penalised manually only to take them out of the positions they occupied until a change can be made to the algorithm.
I don't believe the sites affected will be affected long term because ultimately google will want to discount these links not punish the sites because of them

all of course in my very humble opinion :)

as much as noone likes to have depend on anyone else (usually)
im afraid we must tow the line with google if we really dont want to make an uphill struggle a steeper climb
google gives the traffic and if we want it we gotta play

I'm a later joiner in this whole thing, I noticed a problem two days ago when I noticed one of my sites listed in one such directory was gone from the SERPS. They are actually penalizing sites in these indexes - fortunately the site was just something I created in 2 minutes (just a small profile page, nothing important - nothing I actually care about), but still it was ranking one day very high on the SERPS - the next day it's not even listed (and no there wasn't any black hat tricks on the page, no doorway page, no keyword stuffing, no masking links, none of that stuff + plenty of backlinks elsewhere). But it was penalized all the same because it was listed on that site.

I personally applaud Google for this - we underestimated them, and they won. But they won the battle, not war. Directories still exist, and they're still working - the popular ones will be removed but the non-populars will still help you out - so build your SEO directory, get it known, but not too well known (success is your downfall).

Kudos to Google, you play the game well.

I have stopped submitting to directories now. The links from directories seem to have less an less benefit so i feel its no longer worth it.

And what do you base conclusion on? Directories as as effective in the serp's as they have ever been. No change there.
