Those that have been engaging in the same practices almost certainly WILL be hit sooner or later.

Well, duh. That's what we've been saying.

Uh-huh. I asked you for those examples. Where are they?

Yup - we can finally agree on a point about directories.:D Thats just great.

Well - I was referring to your continued allegation about directories selling PR. Thats what I don't understand - because the submitted sites are listed on deep-innerpages.
I have listings on almost all special directories;) with sitelinks and many of my listings are on PR0/1 pages.

    http://www.wowdirectory.com/dir/817/1/31.php
I am listed on that particular page that does not even have PR0. It is PR- N/A.

As most directories are modelled on heavy advertisements - in the form of link-buying and most directory owners pride himself/herself of ranking on SERPs- thats what is causing the red-flag.:(

So its not about selling- its about too much buying of high PR links ( atleast I think it in case of my penalized directory).

I bought a PR8 link- so my SERPs shoot-up like anything. What puzzles me is that- there is another directory listed with me on that site and it is vistually roaring on SERPs.

It mine has been penalized- that one has not been:( PUZZLING.

Google is gearing up for what it's calling the "world-wide" search and moving away from country-based searches. Borders aren't just coming down geographically, they are dropping in cyberspace as well.

    Ok here you go.

With no personal attack aimed at the owner, this is a good example. Jude works hard on these but unlike the rest of us has managed to escape penalisation.

    www.dirsensei.com

    owner also owns

    www.dirsurfer.com
    www.indexsniff.com

if you check both directories you will see they link back without nofollow and using targetted anchor text.

Now lets look at some of the backlinks to dirsensei

    http://www.itools.com/ < PR7 paid footer link
    http://www.irt.org/script/script.htm < PR7 paid link
    http://www.xchat.org/ < PR7 sponsor link
    http://b2evolution.net/about/features.html < PR7 sponsor link

i could go on all day and show the sitewide PR6 directory links but wont. Now tell me minstrel, why did i get punished when i committed 1 of the 3 crimes, and not dirsensei?

I could give a few more examples, so this wasnt a personal attack on popotalk....

Havent they selected their victims? Hasn't it been suggested that they are monitoring this forum. Maybe they respect straight talking. Whoever suggested that Google is not capable and more importantly able to pull their punches. :D

So, with all this brouhaha about G penalizing directories, is it still worthwhile to submit my sites to them????

Depends on why you want to submit. If you are looking for back links start with the free directories. Better long term value at this point in time.

No just some. Mostly the strongest sites off this forum but there is likely to be a knock on affect and some attrition as the reality sets in. The free directories on the other-hand are free, are generally new directories that dont accept just anyone and are at least being run by directory masters who have a plan for the future.

Maybe some sites were reported for paid links and dirsensei was not one of them, if this is the case Jude can count himself very lucky that none of his directories were hit.

    Thanks Brian

Maybe but I doubt it. :) In any case it has SOME (Date Added: March 12, 2007 12:14:02 PM) NICE CONTENT (Date Added: December 08, 2006 09:22:55 AM) since the very beginning that MOST owners did not bother to do instead they are VERY BUSY BUYING AND SELLING LINKS.

So it is clear what PRIMARY INTENTIONS SOME HAVE that they DON"T SWEAT.

i doubt it, dirsensei sure pass from the eye of google that is why the site is not penalize. Dirsensei got a lot of good site/listing which cannot be seen in other big directories .

I never mentioned content. If you didnt get banned for your nice content (which i have mentioned before, i never said you were a link farm) why did aviva get banned? jeff and his editors add quality sites, he has blogs, he has downloads....

im starting to think it was from advertising on forums also
i think avertising your directory and mentioning pr numbers for certain categories etc has been seen as selling links
i dont see a pattern in the sites that have been penalised
    not all have purchased links
