So once again, Israel has opened the gates of hell to the Palestinians. Forty civilian refugees dead in a United Nations school, three more in another. Not bad for a night's work in Gaza by the army that believes in "purity of arms". But why should we be surprised?

Have we forgotten the 17,500 dead – almost all civilians, most of them children and women – in Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon; the 1,700 Palestinian civilian dead in the Sabra-Chatila massacre; the 1996 Qana massacre of 106 Lebanese civilian refugees, more than half of them children, at a UN base; the massacre of the Marwahin refugees who were ordered from their homes by the Israelis in 2006 then slaughtered by an Israeli helicopter crew; the 1,000 dead of that same 2006 bombardment and Lebanese invasion, almost all of them civilians?

What is amazing is that so many Western leaders, so many presidents and prime ministers and, I fear, so many editors and journalists, bought the old lie; that Israelis take such great care to avoid civilian casualties. "Israel makes every possible effort to avoid civilian casualties," yet another Israeli ambassador said only hours before the Gaza massacre. And every president and prime minister who repeated this mendacity as an excuse to avoid a ceasefire has the blood of last night's butchery on their hands.

The Red Cross workers found the children, who were so weak they could not stand, sheltering next to the bodies of their mothers in a house in Zeitoun, southeast of Gaza City. Another man was found alive, but again too weak to stand. At least 12 corpses were lying on mattresses.

In another house nearby they found 15 survivors, several of whom were wounded. There were three more bodies in a third house. On Wednesday, a Palestinian volunteer with the Red Crescent who was in the same convoy described seeing dozens of dead bodies. Among those killed on Monday when the houses were shelled were three boys, all from the Samouni family.

The Red Cross said Israeli soldiers were posted 80 metres away and had several positions nearby, including two tanks.

It was a shocking incident, said Pierre Wettach, head of the Red Cross delegation for Israel and the Palestinian territories. "The Israeli military must have been aware of the situation, but did not assist the wounded. Neither did they make it possible for us or the Palestine Red Crescent to assist the wounded."

The Red Cross had been asking the Israeli military to allow them access to Zeitoun since Israel's ground invasion began on Saturday, but only a three-hour lull in the fighting on Wednesday allowed them to make the dangerous journey.

The Red Cross said Israel had breached international humanitarian law by not allowing access to the wounded and said it "considers the delay in allowing rescue services access unacceptable".

Two drivers in a clearly marked UN convoy were killed yesterday by an Israeli tank shell. The Israeli military has attacked two UN schools, killing more than 46 Palestinians sheltering inside. Another 35 bodies were pulled from the rubble in areas across Gaza City yesterday during another three-hour lull in the fighting.

The Palestinian death toll after nearly two weeks of the Israeli bombing offensive now stands at about 750, with about 3,000 injured, .....

Attacks on medical staff, hospitals and vehicles are prohibited. But more than 20 medical staff have already been killed in Gaza by the Israeli military.

The Israeli military may have committed war crimes in Gaza, the UN's most senior human rights official said tonight, as Israeli troops pressed on with their increasingly deadly offensive in defiance of a UN security council resolution demanding a ceasefire.

Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights, singled out the killing this week of up to 30 Palestinians in Zeitoun, south-east of Gaza City, when Israel shelled a house where its troops had told about 110 civilians to take shelter.

OCHA said the incident took place on 4 January, a day after Israel began its ground offensive in Gaza. According to testimonies gathered by the UN, Israeli soldiers evacuated about 110 Palestinians to a single-storey house in Zeitoun. The evacuees were instructed to stay indoors for their safety but 24 hours later the Israeli army shelled the house. About half the Palestinians sheltering in the house were children, OCHA said. The report also complains that the Israeli Defence Force prevented medical teams from entering the area to evacuate the wounded.

They figure either Israel will not retaliate or if they do, they can make the PR case that you try that Israel is killing kids. Problem is, it's only the Israelis that seem to be saying this. They figure that if they say things like this, they can make a PR case that Palestinians are hiding behind children.

Now if you had some reports from the UN, the Red Cross or some other similar organisation that says the Palestinians are using children as shields, I'd be happy to take a look at it and if it's true, I would be the first to condemn it. I do not condone such action. What we do have is verifiable evidence that Israeli military have targeted civilians and schools with devastating weapons INCLUDING phosphorus bombs.

See...if all the hype about Palestinians using children as shields WERE actually true then don't you think that, rather that 90% of the world supporting Palestine and condemning Israel..it would be the other way round? So, less than 8000 people dead over 25 YEARS is what is being compared to a holocaust? I am always surprised how small the actual number of dead is from this conflict. It is a testament to the Israeli restraint in the face of constant threats and provocations.

I know that have said that they targeted Hamas members firing mortars from a school playground, but that as you know, is a far cry from "targeting civilians".

Israel has show the world video evidence of the weapons being fired from schools. It is up to you to ignore that evidence and demand evidence that from sources you know can't provide it.
