Isn't this a little too broad for broad match?

A campaign I created 2 weeks ago has been performing awful. Lot of impressions, 7% CTR .29% conversion at $189.63 cost per.

The search term that had been burning all the money was "plus size corsets"
I checked my hittail tracker, and it appears that our ads were being served for just "corsets". In fact, rarely did I see any for "plus size corsets". I did a search on corsets myself and sure enough.. there was my ad being served every time.

From the Google FAQ , I interpret it should not work that way. I also find it odd that I had "bbw corsets" and "diva corsets" broad matched, and they had practically zero activity. From what I have understood from the Google FAQ, one of those should have been broad matched to "corsets" before "plus size corsets"

What would be the point of broadmatching a multiple word phrase if it considers one word without the others a match?

    Would appreciate opinions on this.

That's very odd. An ad with plus size corsets as a broad match should not appear for a search using just corsets. I would contact Google, as there seems to be a fault.

With all of the impressions you are getting, why not do a quick test and go from broad to exact match? You should see results pretty quickly and then you will know if exact works for you.

I had exact match running as well. No problems there. I still think it was wrong of them to serve the ad for "corsets".

Broad Match also includes Expanded Matching.

It'll include other keywords that it thinks may mean roughly the same thing.

I'd suggest looking at the new report available on Google (Search Query Performance), and see what people have been searching for.

Then put the ones that you don't like in as negative match.

Just remember the square brackets on -[corsets], or your adverts will disappear completely!
