I was simply doing research on SEO companies when I came across more then a handful who guarantee first pages results and yada yada, but i found them on the 8 or 9th page! This is why I said what I said.

Old Welsh - I think it does matter where your site ranks, better rankings = more money, most of the time. If you're turning away customers then I think you need to expand and hire more people. You're just turning away the green.

I'm sure you're good at what you do but it seems like a lot of "companies" over-promise and under-deliver. They create a site and claim how good they are, they build a couple links for you, change a few meta tags, all of the sudden they're SEO "experts". This market is flooded with wannabes. I know that there are a few out there that do acutally know what they're doing but most dont.

Kevin you have hit the nail on the head. A lot of companies do over promise and under deliver. And you found them all by looking in the serps.

Even seomoz, a company 100% about seo and with a huge number of links, doesn't rank in the top 10 for seo.

If you had asked some legitimate sites that make good money from organic listings who did their seo then you would have come across people like OWG.

Rank for something like SEO or, even worse, cheap seo, then you just get people trying to get free advice and low priced services which you can't provide.

Who cares where an seo company ranks for there own search terms. What do their clients have to say about them, if clients are happy then that is all that matters. So just because a company does not rank under seo or any other seo terms, but has clients that rank in the top ten for keywords like "gift baskets" or "morgage brokers" then that seo company is no good at what they do?

What kills me is when the wannta be client ask that you rank them under something very competive and then only wants to pay you $1,000 or less for it, now that is stupid. Just by looking at the comp of certain keywords I already know if I can get them in the top ten or not, however I would never tell them that, I agree that one should never do that in attempt to get sales.

My take is that as long as the seo company provides what the client is looking for then that is what counts the most.

99% of SEO offers are scams

Professional SEO costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and is for big companies with huge budgets. Those programs you see for a couple hunderd or couple thousand dollars are scams.

You should never deal with any company that guarantees top rankings, regardless of where the SEO company ranks themselves. The only thing a legitimate SEO company should guarantee is that your website will be optimized to the most current (ethical) industry standards.

LOL. now we are getting somewhere. WHY should I expand and take on more people? I sold a company that employed lots of people, employing lots of people is a PITA. I did the 'grow the company thing', don't want to do it again, although we do have some sites we are selling next year and they are on target to sell for a decent wedge of money (as in 7 figures £££).

There comes a time when we decide what we want out of life. I will repeat the story I use to illustrate it.

There were two bulls stood at the top of a field, and Old bull, and a young bull. The young bull looked down at the herd of cows, and said 'let's run down and shag one of them cows'. The old bull said, How about we walk down, and shag them all' :D

These days, I just walk. I am 45, and my days of growing employee led businesses have gone. Thanks to the web, I can walk through life, while automation runs .

That was cute. I take it that you have burned a few times which why are you so bitter towards seo companies. The point I was trying to make is that to say that all companies that charge a 100 or 1,000's of dollars are scams is just stupid. There are alot of seo companies that can get the job done for a few thousand dollars.

well, as a former seo myself (former meaning not doing it anymore but still up to date), I just promise clients that I can guarantee an increase in traffic. ;) ultimately the target is top 10 in keyword but for the short term, the only thing I promise is more customers. :D

lol, like OWG has been saying, YOUR website rankings don't matter as long as you achieve results for your clients, hell I'd rather have good word of mouth any day than a single top ten listing IMO

I charge £350 for a website report that is fairly comprehensive. Does this mean I am a scammer? ;) I prefer to work with smaller companies where I am dealing with the owner, and they carry out most of the work. I just advise them what to do and how to do it. In effect I teach them the basics of SEO. I don't need to make massive sums of money any longer, I keep my rates way below where they should be (unless it is an involved job with a larger company when I charge normal rates). So does this mean I am scamming :)

I get all new clients by word of mouth referrals so optimizing my website is not high on my list of things to do.

How much you charge should depend on the amount of work that is needed.

I got a website with about 30,000 pages from 300 to top 15 for $1,500.

How? All I did was remove session ids from his url and wrote a script for dynamic titles and redirects. He had enough links and his links were growing naturally. $1,500 for about 3 hours of work and another day of testing.

By some people's standards that would make me bogus and a scam just based on the amount I charge not the results I achieved
