Ahh, the good old days of the expanding empire of Islam. How she has fallen under the wheel. Part of the cycle of life really. Many Germans look back fondly on the days when the Nazi's controlled most of Europe. Their organized industry and scientific progression were unparalleled. Rome, at the turn of the modern era, controlled most of Europe, including much of what later became the ottoman empire. Britain's empire actually circled the planet, which is where the phrase "the sun never set on the British empire" comes from. I suppose the difference is, we don't have the Italians, Germans, and English creating posts which idealize those periods wishing they would return. Imperialism is dead. Capitalism runs the planet now my friends. Get with the modern age. [Edit]If one had to look back and admire, the Romans win that contest hands down. Their 2000 year old structures of stone with indoor plumbing still stand in Northern Africa, while the primitive mud huts created by the Ottomans who came after disintegrate on a yearly basis. Rome is one thing but seeing something like Volubilis in Morocco in contrast to its impoverished and shabby surroundings is a real eye opener.
