last week was IPv6 world day and seems like all the big guys are getting ready for IPv6 by making their websites ipv6 compatible....when do the us little guys have to start transitioning our websites?

I am not sure that there is "anything" to do as far as making a change at the website level, I could be wrong on that, but from what I understand currently it is not an issue.

If ever it is to be done, won't the host be responsible for it?

or you host your own sites?

IPv6 won't affect your website, it's merely how viewers are being routed. If anything, it's DNS related.

Er, the "big guys", if you mean google and akamai, I'd say.. no.

The "big guys" are the Tier one and two providers colo facilities, cable providers, and other IP bw providers. And they're not.
The rest of us? Don't care to spend more money on more expensive routers and other equipment, especially when the "big guys" don't even support it yet.

Don't be fooled. There's plenty of IPv4 to go around yet for years to come.
