Is your site or forums more popular?

If you have a site that also runs a forum, which section gets more visitors? Why do you think so?

My forum is pretty big, but I only get around 500 unique visitors a day on them. My main site gets around 3000 unique/day.

I would suggest to get listed in forum directories, this will increase targeted traffic.

This depends on what category of your forum and your main site belong. But you can work on SEO for both of them, right?

The only forums I have are included in my membership sites (non-private forum topics are publicly accessible) and they are pretty popular with the members.

I find running forums in this manner makes it a lot easier to be successful because you have a captive audience and you can make it necessary for them to use the forum to utilize whatever part of the membership program you desire ;)

So if you have a membership style site I recommend including a private forum for the membership and leaving it publicly accessible as well. I.E. non-members can see the other forum topics and how popular they are but can only access the non-private forum topics until they join the membership site.
