There are a lot of sales now for computers, you could always venture into that, or if you are capable of doing and your computer allows it, you can add more ram!
go to my computer and right click and hit properties... click on the advanced tab the first box that says performance, in that box theres a button that says settings, click it. hit adjust for best performance... check, "Smooth edges of screen fonts", "Use common tasks in folders", "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop", and "Use visual styles on windows and buttons"...you wont notice a visual difference.... Well, could you tell us what sticks of RAM you have in your computer? Do you have 3x256MB or 1x512MB with 1x256MB? If it's the second option, I would recommend taking out the 256MB and replacing it with another 512MB. If you have enough money, it would be recommended to take out both sticks of RAM and just replace it with 2x1GB. I think your computer should be able to support it. Look up your computer specifications on Dell to make sure.

Also, like other people said, msconfig, just disable everything, you'll start it up when you need the program; on a laptop, this will save battery. Jordan
I ahve 4gb ram so and a 3ghtz dual core processor so im always OK. Another suggestion is to clean the inside of the PC. CPU fan, motherboard and other parts get very dusty. it affects cooling and causes slow speeds.
My computer is so slow right now. I'm still waiting for a hard drive from Newegg, which is set to be delivered on the 8th but I'm sure UPS will find an excuse to not have it here by then. I have 79.5/80GB used on my hard drive, everything is so cluttered, I only have 1GB of RAM so using resource-intensive programs isn't possible (especially since I'm on Vista)... can't wait to do a fresh reformat with the new hard drive.
re-install your OS and upgrade to 2 gig of ram since it's very cheap these days. If you have 1 or 2 gig of ram you can disable virtual memory for a faster pc
It would be better that you could provide us your motherboard model, and from there we should know your motherboard are capable of supporting RAM and processor. There is a possibility that you are actually using (256MB x 3, or 512MB x 1 with 256MB x 1, or 256MB x 4 with 256MB shared to vga, or ...) this are such posibility. Since you have cleared out unnessary, what you meant by running slow? In game terms or normal activity terms?
My computer's slow, I assume because my laptop's screen is broken off and the wireless antennae is run through it but it's been cut, so my wireless is really slow, and my computer is filled with thousands of files that I've downloaded, and stuff lol. I need to clean it up really bad
