Is your computer slow?

My computer is extremely slow! How might you speed it up?
I know how it is to work with a slow computer, what about you?

A computer with these specs shouldn't be slow, should it?

    Purchased 2 years ago:
    Intel(R)
    Celeron(R) CPU 2.53GHz
    2.53 GHz, 768MB of RAM

Also, I cleaned out a lot of stuff, and most of my files are stored on an ext. hard drive.

I have 51.3 out of 71.4 GB of free space as well. I keep getting "Virtual Memory is Low" messages a lot too.

So, how do you handle a slow computer? I could really use some advice!

I think you got unused autorun program such as skype or disc image.
run msconfig and see which program is not necessary.
    HOpe this one helps :)

    Jeremy,

One thing that you are able to do is stop a load of programs starting up on your computer when you turn it on.

To do this, go to start > run > Type: "msconfig" (without the quotes), then click the "Startup" tab, and uncheck anything that you don't want to start up when you turn on the computer.

Defrag your hard drive. Maybe that is why your computer is slow. If it don't solve the problem, a fresh clean installation will make it fast again.

Mine is getting stuck sometimes as well - I have a Toshiba satellite A100 laptop. I think computers and all the technology could be a lot faster today and I still don't understand e.g. why do does it take 2 minutes to load windows on my PC when I switch it on, it could be 10 seconds...

Wow, thanks for the advice everyone! I ran the CCleaner (still cleaning), and it found over one thousand register problems. I just clicked fix all, and saved a backup to my desktop. I normally defragment my hard drive twice per month, and I just did that this morning. Hopefully these steps everyone has given me will do some good to my computer@

As far as switching to another os, like Linux...I've done that before too! I like Linux, I just don't like the issues with compatibility.
