Yahoo! Messenger been tested by the software engineers on 15 Jun 2010 and has been found "SAFE TO INSTALL" on any computer. This means that the software contains no viruses, spyware, adware, trojans or backdoors and installing it poses no threat to the operating system. Yahoo! Messenger can be installed with no concern by any computer user; therefore, it has been granted the "Safe to Install" award.
Yahoo Messenger provides the archive option to all users. By default it is set to remember all chat conversations but delete them every time you sign out. You can change it to either not remember any conversation at all or remember conversation and not delete them like the default. This option can be accessed using Messenger->Preferences->Archive All chat conversations are stored the user's computer if the always remember option is selected.
However, there are some vulnerabilities with File Sharing in Yahoo Messenger, but, they exist in all P2P file sharing applications. When you are sending/receiving files from someone, a TCP/IP connection is formed between your computer and the other person's computer. This connection is open at both ends to allow file sharing. This open connection can be exploited by anyone to gain access to your computer. Simple TelNet commands (used for remote connections) can be used to access the connection. I am not here to scare anyone away from using using Yahoo Messenger. Just thought I'd share it. This vulnerability exists in all P2P file sharing systems and so does its solution. A simple anti-virus program with a decent Firewall can prevent any unauthorized TelNet access to your system. All MS-Windows operating systems (XP and above) come with an in-built Firewall, so you do not really have to worry chatting with your friends. Just be a bit careful when sharing big files (that take a long time to transfer) with strangers.
