Is Yahoo Getting Desperate?

I normally avoid using any sort of PPC as there are IMO better ways to market your products even though I have accounts with most of them.

To my surprise today when checking my email I had a message from Yahoo. At first I thought it was about the $20 or so balance I have on their PPC program that is collecting dust.

But instead it was a message wanting me to promote Yahoo Messenger. They are willing to pay $1 for each person I get to download it as well as other rewards for referring people to their hosting, profiles, etc....

I know that Yahoo has been getting slapped around like a little brother by Google. But are they really getting that desperate? A dollar for each person who gets people to signup for a free service?

Is there something they have planned that I do not know about?

Anything that drives people away from Micro$oft must surely be a good thing. Besides Yahoo innovates whereas Micro$oft copies off those that innovates so M$ will probrably do the same thing eventually.

Messaging services earn those companies alot of revenue from data harvesting the messages that they can then sell on for profit so $1 is nothing by comparison. (Unless your email is a hoax.)

It's marketing, getting a bigger share of the market raises the value of the company, and thats what they need now that MSN is targeting them.

The email you received may have been a hoax, this does not seem like something yahoo will do.
