The last time I went on yahoo chat I kept getting spammed by bots, but then I found a room of wrestling fans that were not bots. However, I had to turn PM off while in the rooms, or else I would get constantly flooded by bots.

I think yahoo chat, like a lot of chats that were popular in the 90's are in fact dead.

Yes Yahoo Chat is dead and gone, well at least what it used to be is. If you want to chat somewhere that's still free and does NOT have any bots try OohYa Chat at oohya.net They have webcams, voice, photos, videos, groups, and blogs.

yah! its freaking funny. Try saying "Are You a bot" to a random person in Yahoo Chat. and the bot would reply: "What's a bot?" hahaha.

Pretty much. If you like being subjected to bored people who think it's funny to enter a chat room and start throwing profanities around for no reason at all or advertise their sites, then go ahead. I used to go there for programming help. What a waste of time.

Oh, yeah. You gotta love the bots. I don't even log into IM anymore, because of that.

I have never used yahoo chat so I'm not sure what people
mean when they say the bots chased people away. How did
    the bots chase people away?

Well, the answer is quite simple actually. For every real user you are looking at about 20 bots (and that is a safe estimate). So let's do the math right quick.

    100 real users = 2,000 bots

Now take a guess at the odds of actually having a conversation with a real person? Not very good lol. So with that said, bots made people lose interest in chatting by overtaking the chatrooms. Thus bots chasing people away ;)

Why would you spend time on a chat service? Boredom.

I used to chat on Yahoo Messenger for hours when I was in high school between 96 and 00. Now I can't even stand the idea of it. Cell phones are so much more convenient. Awww. Memories...

There is no one to talk to in yahoo chat these day, so I believe it is effectively dead.

Yahoo chat is still very much alive. The chat rooms are still freely available. The bot problem has been around for a very long time. Of course if you only go for the Romance rooms expect lots of bots other rooms are better.
