Is Yahoo catching on to blog commentors?

For a few months I've been commenting on (Both dofollow and nofollow) blogs to gather incoming links. I haven't been spamming and my comments are getting approved. I gathered around 13k in Yahoo links by this method (Obviously I didn't post on that many blogs, but they circulate somehow). Recently I've noticed the number dropping and I've lost about 3000 of those links in the past week.

So my question is this: Are they changing how they deal with blog comments? It always seemed to me that eventually search engines would catch on and lower their influence (Like they did with metatags). Or am I just unlucky?

As long as you're getting traffic to your wensite don't even worry about links or page rank.

It only stands to reason that "Self linking" will eventually be as viewed as watered down links without much real indication of actual voting for a page because of great , or informative content...because it isn't.
It's like giving yourself an award and posting it on the wall.

I don't know any concrete sources to back this up, I am merely speculating based on logic.
Comments are "self linking" and go against what search engines claim that they are doing to show the most relevant results from respected sources.
How is voting for yourself over and over again a true indication of the quality of your information ?
    It's not. It's manipulation.

The links you lost are probably the nofollow ones. Theres nothing wrong with blog commenting as long as its not spam so I dont see why they would "catch on"

As long you are not spamming,it's not related to your blog commenting as long you have a good traffic.

yea, I think search engines know how to handle blog comment links and will no doubt make changes as more and more blogs come online (some just for the purpose of linking to other sites)

It just stands to reason that as long as you are posting excellent unique content that is meant for the human eye and not a search engine bot, and you leave valuable comments and not mundane crap like 'good post' or 'I agree', then you should do well because that is all both the search engines and the searchers are looking for. i.e. information that will help them solve a problem, need or want.
