I Use Wordpress as a Blog and CMS Software. Its the easiest out there to use. But that doesn't mean its not going to take a long while to really get the hang of all of it's possibilities.
I don't think wordpress is suitable for blog newbies. Knowing a little HTML and CSS is very important. See my article: WordPress is Not Suitable for Newbies
Really? I was a newbie or should I say a noop when I was started to blog. And I am using WordPress self hosted. I read guides of course. So, no problems for newbies I think. It's just the commitments that we can throw on it.
Its really hard to the compare Wordpress to Blogger. If you want to be a serious blogger you need Wordpress hands down.
But not the WordPress.com. Get yourself a host, get yourself a domain names, and install WordPress on it. Install the reqired plugin sunch as SEO plugin and run it.
Find any cpanel host that uses fantastico. Your WP install will be in a matter of clicks. Then download the WP automatic updater plugin. Again, update to the latest version with a few clicks. Easy
Everybody here seems to be fan of wordpress. For a good reason! But the best thing about wordpress is not it's usability, but the fact that google offers you an answer on any question regarding wordpress. In the beginning even wordpress might seem hard, but I'm sure if I talk to you again next week, you can call yourself a pro. Good luck!
I also recommend WP. Its insanely easy to understand once its installed. Installing it can sometimes be tricky but a lot of hosting providers offer a WP auto installer
