I have read some old topics which say W3Schools teaches bad practises however do they still teach bad practises or is it now a good source to learn from?

I definitely agree. W3schools has an excellent guide in regards to the development of HTML and usage of CSS.

Make sure you also get your code validated. I know some think it is not worth it, but trust me, nothing is better than validated code.

W3schools is not related to the World Wide Web Consortium, aka W3C or w3.org.

Definitely a great place to use for refecence. I used htmldog.com to learn basic HTML and CSS pretty quickly, with that knowledge now I constantly use w3 as reference

I have never ever heard of W3Schools teaching bad practices, like Wysiwyg4 mentioned, they set the standards. That's where I learned to hand code and became disciplined in my coding.

W3Schhools tutorials are well past the expiry date. Their tutes teach methods that are outdated by nearly a decade, e.g. layouts using tables and frames; each long since deprecated usages or simply poor practice.

Let me repeat, since there are those who choose not to read the thread before posting the same old claptrap: W3Schools is in no way affiliated with W3C, or W3.org. W3C is the organization that develops web standards. W3Schools is some guys in the next cubical with a website, who don't keep their pages' coding, or their tutorials up to date.

    Clear?

Try htmldog.com for a good set of tutorials.

    cheers,

    gary

Its alright and it does help you if you are beginning out - as it covers xhtml and css and javascript and also php all on the same site - with examples (some interactive). Its always a good place to visit if you forget a line of code or 2 :)

W3Schools is in no way affiliated with W3C, or W3.org. W3C is the organization that develops web standards. You might try going to this link and see that W3Schools and W3C are affiliated.

    http://www.w3schools.com/site/site_w3c.asp

Dave Raggett at W3.org is still teaching tables.

    http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Guide/Advanced.html

Yes tables and frames are old and are deprecating, even your Applets are deprecating, which they also explain. Basically they are pushing CSS.

And by the way, I do read the thread and all the posts that follow before I post a new message.
